Using A Litter Box For Yorkins I've read numerous references to using a litter box rather than pee pads. If you use a litter box for your yorkie, what litter do you recommend? Of course we want something safe for our little ones, especially if there are pups near it - they have to "taste-test" everything!!! I haven't researched various litters, but want to try this method, especially for pregnant girls or post-whelp when it's hard for them to get outside to go - and a pee pad becomes 'messy'.... OR when traveling, I think it would be easier for them to determine the difference - - peepad vs. floormat OR litterbox vs floormat!!! At least I hope SO!!! = ) |

I bought a doggy litter box at PetSmart and put potty pads in it. That's what Sugar uses. I love it because he can't miss the potty pad now and if he goes on the edge and it seeps underneath, it's easy to just hose out. I tried to train my daughter's dog Spike to use it as well but he just wouldn't so he goes outside (hopefully:p). |
I litter box trained Cricket when she was a puppy,, using Second Nature litter and litter box,, but, she NEVER would stop eating the litter,, i sprayed it with Bitter Apple,, Bitter Orange,, vinegar,, nothing worked,, she'd use the litter box,, but would still eat and play with the litter,, so i gave up,,but not on the litter box,, i just went to disposable pads in the litter box,, that worked very well for us til we added a second Yorkie (Daisy) who is our Teapot and she'd use it,, but mostly would end up backing up over the side or on the side,, so i finally gave up on the litter box and just put the pads down,, then after the third Yorkie added (Trixie) we found Little Bits washable potty pads and that is what we now use with our 4 Yorkie girls (Ayla is #4),,, works great for us! i have a dozen washable pads now,, 8 here where we are most of the time and 3 back home for the weekends we get to be there and use on in the truck on the road... sorry ,, but we never could break Cricket from eating the litter,, tried everything recommended,, though i did try grass blocks too,, and liked that idea,, just put blocks of grass (like you put down in your yard) in the litter box,, but,, it would die too quickly and be over used with now 4 Best of Luck!:) |
Thank you for the replies!! For some reason, I just didn't think of putting a peepad IN a litter box. That sounds real dumb, but hey, as I get older, I get "blonder" (really gray but I don't confess to having any!!!) I just know how much my boys, especially, love to kick after going and was trying to picture that IN A BOX in my house. =) I had persian cats that would daintly SIT ON the corner of the box and go over the side, then cover up 'nothing'.. and think WOW, I'm a good girl!!!! it's all gone!!!! = ) |
If you want to use a litter box with washable pads in it. I can custom make them to fit your litter box. |

To the original poster, we too, use the pads in the litter box. I tried too, to use the litter when AprilLove was a puppy, but yeah, she enjoyed the pellets for play more than for potty :) So i switched to the pads and it works great, and they can tell a difference, because they have to go into the pan to do their business. |

Let me know. With it being litter box size I may be able to give you a break on the price. |
I too will be doing the litter box washable pad training. What size litter box do I buy and are we talking about just your average every day litter box for cats? |

Purina® secondnature® Housetraining Solution The one pictured on the front page of the website is the small, I wouldn't recommend it unless your Yorkie is under 3 lbs or less. The medium has a good amount of room for them to circle in and find that "perfect" spot, lol Forgot to add, that the medium measures on the inside at 15" x 20" length by width |
Thank you MaryKay for the dimensions and the recommended size. I hadn't gotten that far yet, but i have kids that range from 3 lbs to 7lbs.... so a little 'room' will be required, I'm sure. 'specially my girl, Tosh. Has to fix the blankie just perfect before she lays down, has to pick up each kibble walk three steps and eat it, I swear she has OCD!!! = ) |
puppy pads in a litter pan I trained my little boy to use a puppy pad in a medium sized litter pan. I tried the litter at first and he wanted to eat it too. The other nice thing is that if you use a 23 x 24 sized pad and a medium sized litter pan, you can cut the pad in half and get two uses out of one pad!! He did really well with it, he is a kicker to but he just hops out of the pan and then does his kicking and waits for his praise. This is also nice for traveling or taking him to someone else's home since there is no litter mess. I took him to Alabama at about 4 months and just took his pan and put it in the floor board and when we stopped put him in it and he went. Also, I used the training spray at the beginning to help motivate him to use the pan/pad combo. But we don't use it anymore. |
Puppy Pads in Litter Box Ok - what is the name of this spray that you spray on the pad that entices them to use it? |

I would love to try that. My problem is Kayla likes anything paper. (actually she likes anything she can tear up). I know what would happen. She would tee tee in it and then pull the pad out and tear it up all over the house. I'm beginning to think she is a losing cause. I know one thing, I'm not replacing my carpet until she is completely house broke. |

Try the washable potty pads. They are very hard to tear up and they seem to be more attracted to them than the paper ones. |
They would have to be undestuctable. This little girl tears up more than you would believe. Of course her daddy thinks she is an angel. Just blame it on those ole' schnauzers. |

In all the time I have been using them I have only had one puppy chew a hole in one and it was only a hole the size of a quarter. They are almost indestructible. |
We use the second nature dog litter pan (medium size) and the litter. At first Buddy did try to eat/play in the litter but we just kept discouraging him when he tried to do it and he quit. He would eat a pee pad too, so either way.. Anyway I do really like the litter, I find clean up to be much more pleasent than the pee pads. It is no fun to travel with though, that is when pee pads are easier. As far as cost is concerned I am not really sure of the comparison, it costs 20.00 for a big bag of litter and that lasts us 6 weeks. You could probably stretch it out longer because I tend to fill the box more than I probably need to. |
I used to only use pads on the floor but as we all know that can get messy, especially if they miss. When I introduced them to the litterbox they were weary at first but dab a little pee from the last pad onto the new one and place it in the litterbox that really attracks them to go there. You don't need to spend money on the spary, just wiping a little pee on the new pad your creatimg a bullseye. ;) |
I bought a frame type thing that locks the pad in and holds it in place. Got it at Petsmart.:) |
Just make sure before you invest in the washable ones that your Yorkie will "go" in the litter box. I tried everything with my pup--litter, pee pads, cloth pee pad--and it turns out she just didn't like the box. I use regular, throw-away pee pads now and she's perfectly content with them. I don't have a personal washer/dryer, so I rather just throw away the pads then take them down to my communal washroom. Hope this helps! |
Try UGODOG. It's the latest thing in indoor dog potties. It doesn't require pee pee pads or litter. You can use newspaper inside of it if you wish, or nothing at all. It's very short (1 inch off the ground), and so it is easy for even the smallest puppies to get on and off of it. The grids are designed to cushion dogs' paws and are safe to use. It costs about $40, and that's it, no more pee pee pads or dog litter or pee stains on the floor. litter box So how exactly do you manage to train your pup to use the box? |
Uhmmm.....info and training aids.... I wasn't too sure about the UGODOG box because some reviews say to still use a pee pad or litter in the bottom of the pan. Also, my concern with plastic holding disease in the crate part after puppy goes #2. At least I know with a pee pad or litter it can removed completely. Furthermore, where is the odor control with that? Not saying it isn't a good idea...just not sold completely on it yet. As for associated cost with shipping Pet Food Supplies Dog Cat Bird ... PetFoodDirect.com offers great deals. It was suggested to us to use natural pine litter if we were to litter train. It costs $8.99-$9.99 for a 24lb bag on this site, which should last you a good while. We found even with shipping it was cheaper. Smells good...not overbearing and then we even tested some pellets at a pet store to see how it worked. We dropped it in water and watched it dissolve which helped us to understand a little better the process of what happens to the pellets. I even thought about the crystals...etc. Yet, fear of the furbaby eating them made me look at some other options. As for how to train your yorkie to use the litter box, I found these sites helpful while I was researching the topic: How To Litter Box Train Your Dog http://www.petsafe.net/education/lit...s.php:thumbup: Litter box training How To Train Your Dog To Use The Litter Box ~~ Small Dogs Paradise : Holistic Approach to Pampering and Healing Small Dogs Well, hope this helps someone... |
UGODOG comes with instructions on training your dog to use it. They're very similar to training your dog to use a pee pad or litter box. Also, there's a great book called House Training for Dummies (about $12 new), and it has a short but effective chapter on indoor potty training that works really well for pee pads, newspaper or indoor dog potties like UGODOG. Good point on the No. 2 issue, but I don't see how using litter is any more sanitary than using a grate system like UGODOG. At least with the plastic grates, you can use a disinfectant wipe every day and wipe it down nice and clean. With litter it's impossible to get each piece of litter that touched the poop. And with just pee pads, those things don't absorb the pee right away and sometimes they don't absorb it completely so the dog ends up tracking urine all over the house. |
