how to get him to go out a certain door??? We take our guy out the same door 90% of the time. He will not let us know in any way if he has to go potty. Are we expecting too much for only having him 2 weeks? I am afraid he will never sit by our door to let us know. We have been picking him up and taking him almost everytime. |
I would suggest having him follow you to that door instead of carrying. He will eventually associate that door with going potty, but it'll probably be awhile. I think mine were in the 6 months range before it happened. |
Too soon. Definately let him walk to the door and keep saying lets's go potty. He is still new to his environment and will settle in and get the hang of it. |
Yeah, you're expecting too much. It's OK. He will get it. Just KEEP being consistent and when he is ready he will know just what to do! Have you tried bell training? It's not even so much that he doesn't know what door to go out, but that he has practically no bladder control so it's like one of those "Mommy I have to go p.... oops" things when you are potty training a kid. Good luck! |
How old is the pup? They do not have full bladder/bowel control until 6 months of age. So until then, if he's very young he needs to go out every one to two hours. Older pups every 3-4 hours. Make sure you are feeding him on a schedule. You can the bells on your door and everytime you go to open the door to let him out, tough the bells with your finger and see if he will attempt to put his nose there. Do it every time you go out the door. (Eventually he will learn that a bell ringing means an open door.) At any time, if your pup touches the bells with his nose, say "YES!" immediately and hurry over to open the door! Also, when you want him to go outside, clap your hands gently and call him to you. Keep encouraging him with gentle claps and verbal encouragement until he gets out the door. Praise and pet him for a job well done! Take him outside to his designated potty area and wait until he starts to pee or poo. As soon as he starts to go potty (not before...not after!) Say "go potty" and praise/pet gently. Be very consistent and very patient. He will learn to "go potty" on command in his designated area. |
