Running while on the leash... I take Riley out for walks on a regular basis. The only problem is he acts like its the very first time hes been outside. Lol. Hes always trying to run or walk really really fast. He doesn't do it when I take him out in the country. He walks normally when we are on a dirt rode or somewhere thats not populated or busy. Since I'm in Chicago, its super busy with people and traffic. He can not walk normally when we are here. Lol. TIA!!!:D |

they always had a yard before and are used to being free - but this new 'walk on a leash' so far has been stressful ....Just today Cheri came right out of her harness and gave me the biggest heart attack - I didn't stop shaking for 2 hours....lucky she's the one who listens to me but man - my nightmare on EVERY walk is one of them getting loose ....me dropping a leash - or like today - boom - out of the harness - and running into the street which isn't far - so I'll be watching your replies with you - GOOD luck ! |
let me add - a yorkie trying to run while in a harness looks like a little moron :p LOL - hopping along and going nowhere. I so wish my girls would just relax and enjoy it but man ...it's like Pee Wee's BIG ADVENTURE to go out my front door - I tried the STOP then start but they just pick up the pace till they're trying to run again let's just say my neighbors LOVE cats. |
Oh I hope Riley never gets off the leash.:( Sometimes I'll let him run. That means I have to run with him. It gets tiring after a while. Then he'll do this thing where he stops dead in his tracks and I have to stop running. Its a pain. Lol. |
I had this problem for a long time! I also live in a busy area and every little sound, car, biker, walker, dog...got him so excited he was trying to be on the run. I got a harness that has a metal ring that attaches the front of the harness together at the chest. I clip the leash to this instead of the d-ring on the back of the harness. When they try to run it automatically pulls them back towards you and they can't go the direction they want, so they choose to walk and get there a little slower. I'm in no way an expert, but this worked really well for us! |
Oh wow V, I'm so happy you got Cheri back home safe. I don't know what I'd do if Meeko got out of his harness because he forgets his name and all commands the send he got through the door. He, too, likes to run to the end of his leash. I'm always praying his harness is on snug. I with he'd just walk at a nice pace. Kyancer, thats a good idea. Meeko's harness has a ring in the front. Maybe I'll try that next time. Hopefully he'll get the hint that, if he tries to run ahead he'll get turned around. Hopefully THIS will work. I've tried everything else. |
Good thing Cheri listened to you so well and you got her back. Pao will not listened to me once we are out of the door and he pulls like a cow. I dropped his leash today at the park, good thing we were at the park and he ran like crazy and I ran like crazy trying to either step on his leash or grab it and I managed to step on it. |
