Shredding his pee pad - Help! We leave Winston in the kitchen with his food, water, bed, toys and pee pad during the day while we are at work. He has decided it is fun to shred his pee pad. We come home every day to white fuzz everywhere! Has anyone else gone through this and if so, how did you get your puppy to quit? Winston is currently 4 months old. |
Yes, this is quite a common occurrence when the puppy gets bored. You can either buy a pad holder "frame" which sometimes works or go to washable potty pads. If you are interested in the pads let me know. You can see more about them if you click on the link in my signature. Welcome to YT and congrats on the new pup! |
Yep, it happens. Have you thought about the washable pee pads? The ones made by Nancy (Little Bit) Blue Sky Yorkies | Lots of Love in a Little Package Those are heavier and less likely to be torn up or played with. |
LOL! You beat me to it! :p |
If Winston is swallowing any pad fluff, that could be causing his cough. Good luck. It is hard to break them if you arent there when they are doing it. |
You need to make sure he is getting some excerise and getting worn out and that way they will be less bored. Sometimes they outgrow it but you need to try to watch and then stop him when he begins playing with it. Good Luck think we all have been through that problem. |
Thanks for everyone's posts. We decided to take away his pee pad during the day and we just leave newspaper instead. It's not what I wanted to do but just like children, sometimes you have to flexible. He doesn't tear apart the newspaper like he did the pee pad so it seems to have worked (knock on wood!). I was afraid it would confuse him when we would bring back out his pee pad but he seems to understand that during the day = newspaper and while we're home = pee pad. And of course while were outside = pee outside. |
Little Polo went through the shredding of the puppy pads around month 4. Part of the shredding I think was because he was bored and probably a little ticked off that I had left him home while I was at work. The other part I believe was that I switched his puppy pad brand. He eventually grew out of it and I would make it a point to stop him when I caught him, but for about 1-2 months i cleaned up a lot of white fuzz balls |

I was just about ready to post a new thread about almost the same problem!Suzi thinks her pee pads are toys... She loves fooling around with em. Not necessarily because she is bored, but because She can.... LOL. Even when I try a replace the pads, she is right there and grabbing them , takes off, with em, and loves them. Arrrg. :animal-pa However, again Suzi is my little darling, I am at home all day with her, AND I think it is just a puppy thing. :aimeeyork |
my cody is a year and 8 months now, and he use to always rip the pee pee pads when he was younger, i use to feed him twice a day, once in the morning before i left for work and once in the evening. i noticed that when i started to feed him just in the evening (i switched over about 6 months ago), he stopped ripping the wee wee pads.....i do'nt know if he got over it, or if his food gives him that extra bout of energy ....but at least it stopped :aimeeyork:animal36:animal-pa:p;) |
The best solution to the pee pee pad tearing problem is to switch to an indoor dog potty called UGODOG and stop using pee pee pads. It costs about $40, and you won't need pee pee pads any more. You can use newspaper inside of it, or nothing at all. Here's their website: Replace Your Dog Litter Box with an Indoor Dog Potty | UGO PetCare |
Chewie has always gone super-nuts when he smells a fresh pee pad. Supposedly the pheremones they put on them are just too strong to him and he freaks outs (barking, spinning and shredding to a fuzzy dust). I've made a million posts about this very same thing. Thanks JohnQ for the UGO link! It's seems awesome and it's not like you're out hundreds of dollars if it doesnt work. I'll be ordering one ASAP! |
No problem, and good luck with it! |
