peeing in his crate!!!!! WE just got our little guy yesterday and he's peed twice in his crate. He peed twice outside too which is good, but how can we get him not go to in his crate? |
Your crate may be too large. Sectioning it off will help. You may need to take him outside more often, especially if he's young. Be patient, but keep on it, as you don't want this to continue. You want him to see his crate as his bed. I also have food and water in Trixie's crate. She knows its a bed and food area. That might help you as well. My guess is, that you have too large of a crate. Good luck! |
By the way, Yorkies are so small, they have small bladders. They are difficult to train due to this fact. Just be very patient and dilligent about taking him out often. Once you get him situated with the crate, where he's not peeing in it, and he's a bit older, you can keep him in the crate for longer periods of time, say 2-3 hrs. |
Hi! Be happy that your little pup is peeing! When I got my lil guy...it took him forever just to relax and go pee. Here is what I did when I was training from the start (& many YT members won't agree but it worked for my pup)....when I brought him home & set up his crate. I put a pee pad over the top of the cushion in the bottom of the crate. I did this mostly to protect the cushion just in case an accident happened. I only had three accidents EVER. He does not want to go potty in his crate but accidents do happen....he is now 7 months old and won't go potty in his crate. Your baby is so small and he is just getting used to everything, don't worry about the peeing in the crate too much. But you may want to try the pee pad in the bottom of the crate & then just remember, take him outside lots and lots....he will get the idea but it will take a lot of practice and patience.:) |
How is his progress? Any improvement? I expect you should see some improvement soon. |
He is too young to hold it very long. So unless you can take him out every 2-3 hours or less even at night he may have an accident. Don't worry they do learn as they get a little older and he will get the hang of it soon. Remember he has come from a place where he was use to peeing where he lived. Roxie was 4 months but after a couple of weeks she really got the hang of it. Pixie was 13 months so old habits were harder to break but she decided she liked going outside instead of pads. So I have 2 who go outside and 2 who go inside. |
I had a little 5-week-old who was very ill....too young to be away from her mommy, but it was a special circumstance and her mommy wouldn't let her nurse...long story. Anyway, she came from bad circumstances where she was in a crate all the time alone. Dogs typically will not go where they sleep, so she was just going in the corner of her crate because she had no choice and that's all she knew. So, what I did was put a fleece crate bed in there with blankets touching every surface of the bottom of the crate in hopes that she would not go on the blankets since that's where she was sleeping, and they don't like to go where they sleep. I was taking her out of her crate every 1 1/2 - 2 hours for feedings around the clock, so I would also place her on a pee pad, and she would use it. She never once had an accident in her crate, as ill as she was, and that amazed me. Try the blankets and see if it helps, it sure worked for her. And, they need to go often so I would try taking him outside or to his pad every couple hours. He may need to go during the night for awhile too. Good luck!! Good luck! |
I kind of have the same problem. London won't pee in her crate and goes to the pee pad all the time. However she poops in the crate every night and I have to get up extra early to clean the crate out and give her a bath. She is only in the crate at night and we don't go to be until late as you can see by my posting times. The crate is the perfect size for her (the smallest they make I believe) just enough room for her to turn around in. Any ideas? |

I don't know your routine, but perhaps this may help. You may not be giving her enough time outside to do her business. You may also want to try getting her to run around a bit outside, as that will get things "moving." :) Routines are important, as I'm sure you're aware. At a young age, they just can't wait as long as we'd like them to. Remember that dogs will always want to please and they are trying, mommy! :) Good luck. |
Thank you, yesterday he peed outside in the same spot four times and pooped there twice, but today we left him for the first time for an hour and when we came back he pooped and peed in his crate and was sitting in it!!! :( why would he do that? |
London sits in hers as well. We can't take her out so we decided to pad train her. We are lucky if she poops once a day and most of the time it is on our daily walk, but now she seems to make an extra effort to poop in her cage. She pooped right before I put her in for the night and yet again she had pooped and played in it in the crate this morning. |
Aw sweetie you just need to have patience. How old is he. I don't expect much at all from them before 16 weeks. Just like babies, it takes time for them to make the connection. And everything is so new to him right now. Just keep taking him out. Eventually he'll catch on. |
Help... ok I need help. I have two yorkies...one female is 5 years old and the other is four months old and female as well....Ok well the oldest has always slept in the bed with us and I have put up with her missing the potty pad off and on all this time. She will usually use the pad during the day when its in the utility room but at night she seems to want to potty by my door...if I put the pad there she mostly misses...anyway the puppy is another story...sometimes she will happen to hit the potty pad and sometimes not. I let her sleep in the bed with us because I feel guilty. I do keep her in a crate during the day because she is so small and still chewing...I did keep her in a baby playpen but she chewed her way out and escaped...I don't know what to do but if they don't stop pottying on the floor I fear my husband is going to leave...LOL I shampoo carpet all the time. I don't know what to do. I feel so guilty about thinking about not letting them sleep with us anymore. Of course my husband would love that. I don't want them to think I don't love them or I am punishing them. The oldest Abby has slept with us since day one. The puppy has slept with us since about 1 month after we got her. Now they will go potty outside when I take them in the mornings and at night, however, they don't seem to go poop outside very well. I mean it has to be a great day when that happens. I make a big deal out of it when they do go potty outside. I need advice. They are like my babies. I do work during the day and they are alone from about 1000 am til about 200 when hubby gets home. The baby does potty in the crate some but I understand since she has to be in there for a while. I would take her next door to my moms to have her baby sit during the day but the puppy does nothing but shake whenever she leaves the house. She is not very social other than with us. I find that strange because the other (Abby) loves my mom and loves to go see her. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated... |
