Another potty training thread....but different! Okay heres the story...my yorkie is as smart as they come, we take him outside all the time, tell him to go pee and he pees, tell him to go poop and he poops (once he finds the right spot of course) then we tell him to "let's go inside" and he runs in the door and over to where he gets his treat...the problem is HE STILL PEES ON MY FURNITURE!!!! He still poops in the house...I swear its just lazyness!! How do I stop it. We've even used a belly band on him, locked him in the bedroom at night, he is already crated during the day if were are gone, or anytime we are gone actually...I am now home most days of the week and we NEVER have caught him actually in the act of peeing or pooping on the floor or furniture. its just always there.... Its so bad that our beautiful couch slipcover is permantly reeking of urine...by the way any ideas of how to get rid of that smell...it just came back from the dry cleaners and the only difference is the faded mark on it! PLEASE HELP ME! I feel like my only option is to keep a belly band on him ALL THE TIME or crate him at night, neither of which I really want to do! |
What I am doing (& it has worked very well thus far) is putting a harness on Bear with a very short leash attatched to it. This way I can see where he is at all times & I can tell when he has to go to the bathroom. I do not let him have free reign of my house. I just don't trust him at all, lol (he is only two months). You might have to crate him at night though. Have you thought of getting a play yard for him or getting an xpen? This way you can put him in there when you can't watch him, & he can have a puppy pad in there along with food, water, & some toys & a nice bed :) This is what I am doing for Bear (I keep him in the play yard when I can't watch him & also during nighttime) & so far it has worked very well. When he's in his play yard he always goes on the pad. We are trying to train him to go potty outside, but right now he is too young to hold it for very long, so keeping a puppy pad in the play yard works very well for us. -Amy |
I agree with the previous post. I imagine that it's tough, but I think most trainers would tell you that until your dog does not have accidents in the house, it cannot have free access to it (particularly if, as it seems, your dog waits until he's out of sight to have an accident). I've tried teathering my dog to my belt with a 6' leash, and he hasn't had an accident. Then you can use off-leash time as a reward (but only when you're sure he's "empty"). If your dog is as smart as you say he is, I'm sure he'll catch on quickly. |
Have you had him checked for a bladder irritation? My Yorkie's pee doesn't have much odor at all. |
