One trained, the other doesn't get it We have a 10 month old female (Willow) who is pee pad trained. We recently got a male (Jake) now 3 months old who just doesn't seem to get it. We've tried putting extra pee pads around but then Willow thinks she has to leave her mark on all of them. Jake doesn't seem to want to go where she has, instead he is going all over the place. We cleaned the carpets a few days ago hoping that would help but he's still doing it. He seems to know that it is wrong-we see it, say "Uh Oh" and he then hides. We get him, show him the spot, say "no" then put him on the pad and he then either sits or lays on the pad thinking it is his "time out" place or something. My husband thinks we should try training him outside, but there are coyotes in our neighborhood and Willow does so well that we are able to leave her without worrying. My husband also says that I forget how long it took Willow to train. Please help!!!! |
I cant help with the potty pad training... but what I did with Gracie is if she had an accident I would put her in "time out" and take away all of her toys until she went potty outside... or in your case on the potty pad... but has he gone on it before? because maybe he is confused? maybe he doesnt know where he should go??? I hope it helps... and I didnt "punish" Gracie until she was a little older... but Ive only had to do that 2 times and she hasnt had an accident since... so good luck! |

Sounds like my 2. Dudley who will be 2 in Oct is totally trained. He goes downstairs and outside, but this time of year, he goes downstairs due to the TICKS being really bad around here, we don't take them out. Miley on the other hand is 5 months old and she doesn't get it. I just had her downstairs and she pooed but no pee, and we had been down there for a good 30 minutes. Well she comes back upstairs and what does she do? PEED on the floor uggggggg. Should she be allowed to be free or should she be in her pen until she gets it? She is in her pen at night and when we are gone, but when we are home, we let her run but now I am thinking maybe we shouldn't? We NEVER had this problem with Dudley. |
Thank you! Thanks for the advice...I do believe Jake is a bit confused.....How do you do it with more than one? Do they use the same pad? He has gone on them a couple of times and got praised and treats...but I don't think he really knew what for. Also, unless we catch him, sometimes it's hard to tell if it was his little pee spot or Willows! Should we have a few of these pads around or just one? |
Boy/Girl issue? It just occurred to me that it might be a girl/boy thing? Maybe boys just take longer to train? ....My husband just reminded me that at some point, (does anyone know when?) Jake is going to start lifting his leg to pee....then it will really be "UH OH!!!!!" |

My little guy was 8 mos before he was trained. Boys do take longer I think. Try treating them just the same, when she goes take him out or to the potty pad too. My older dogs really helped training the little guy. Good luck. |

My Ozzy is 6 months old and we still can't trust him. We went the last 2 weeks with no accidents but had one this morning. They are getting fewer and fewer. I'm hoping in the next few months we get there. Just keep taking Jake to the pad every few hours, reward with tons of treats and never scold for an accident you didn't catch him doing. He will have no idea what you are mad about if it's after the fact. You have to constantly watch him if he is loose and rush to the pad if you see an accident about to start. It gets tiresome but my hubby and I trade off watching him. I may be getting to the belly band point soon but refuse to give up hope yet ! :) |
