Question about using collars for walks Hi guys, I've been using a harness to walk my dog ever since we got him. Now 5 months later I want to switch to his collar because I find it that when I use the harness he doesn't walk nicely and doesn't listen to me. Everything is good until he sees another dog. And then he started pulling and chocking, and making weird noises with his throat. I got scared because of the whole tracheal collapsing issue, so I quickly switched to his harness. But the moment I did that, he starting tugging on the leash and not paying attention. So my question is about the different types of collars. Is there a collar type that will minimize the chocking, but still give me the ability to control my dog? Thanks, I'm starting to get desperate here. |
my Daisy would do that kinda thing,, i use Step In Harnesses for all my girls,, but you do loose control of a pulling one that way,, so i did like Cesar says,, and put a loop lead up high on her neck,, with her harness still on and a leash attached,, but the loop lead to control her head,, held UP,, used ONCE,, made our walks most pleasant,,, no more tugging at the lead,, we now walk with just the harness again, ,you just have to teach them how to behave. My trainer doesn't let us use harnasses at all, because you have no control in teaching them to walk correctly, without pulling or tugging. I was afraid at first too, knowing about the trachea issue, but the way you pull up toward the chin doesn't cause harm. Max is a great walker now. It just takes practice. Like yorkie luv of 3 said, when they learn properly you can switch back to the harness if you want. Also, since he's used to the harness, the feel of the collar and leash will take some getting used to and may be bothersome to him at first. Good Luck |

Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to try the collar a few more times. And if that doesn't work, I'll try the Easy Walk Harness or the Premier Gentle Leader. Any of you have experience with any of those products? Paul |
I don't believe any small dog should be led with a collar because of their soft trachea's. What needs to be done is train them properly on walking on a leash. Having a collar that can choke them as a means to correct an unwanted behavior is not the way to go. |
I don't use a choke collar, it's just a regular collar. And I don't tug on the collar to the point where the dog chokes. The only time it chocked him was when he tried going after another dog, and that's when I got scared and quickly clipped the leash to his harness. Don't worry I would never hurt my baby! |
The teacher at Layla's classes gave us a good idea for having control while still using a harness. Some harnesses have a metal ring at the front whose only purpose is to hold the three straps together. If you can find a harness like that, clip the leash onto that ring instead of the back d-ring. If your dog starts to pull, the tension will make them turn back to you. They can't keep pulling forward. It will also shift their attention off of the reason they were pulling in the first place. I had never thought of that before, but I thought it was a really clever idea! |
