Crating again? Hi, my Milous is 7 months old, and I crated him for the first 3 months he was here but then I started trusting him because he was using the peepad always to pee and he wouldn't poop while I am not home plus he never chews on anything in the house, he is a good boy... A month ago, my boyf put him in his crate because he was hyperactive (i know, it was like a punishment to him, which shouldnt have happened!) so he peed in the crate then as soon as we got to my house peed in his other crate as well (i guess for good measure!) Problem is, now he has had two accidents in two days, he peed on the floor (wooden, thank God!)... but i am fearing crating him cuz i dont want him peeing on himself, but i dunno what to do at this point. Do I go back to crating? Do I continued trusting him and just use positive reinforcement? what about when I am at work? any advice would be appreciated! Thanks |
:animal-pa I don't know about your baby, but mine knows when she is being punished and she is so sensitive to punishment. She will shake and pout for hours afterwards. My heart breaks and I have to do some making up real fast. that's why she is so spoiled :) I bet yours peed in the crate because she was nervous.. Just a thought.... Hope he gets better :) (puinishment=scolding) |
yes! crating works....! Crate training can be great but must be consistent to work. Your yorkie should never be put in the crate as a punishment (find another place if necessary). The crate will become a sanctuary for the yorkie. They will learn to love it and feel safe there. They should only be used during the night and for short periods during the day (never more than 4 hours in the day). While training, never force the yorkie in. He will start going in on his own when he feels safe. Encourage with praise and treats, comfortable padding, favorite toys, etc. Once he goes in willingly in, clothes the door, praise w treats and leave for only 10-15 minutes a few times per day before leaving in for long night hours. Once its time to take him out be very quiet, not making it a big deal, pick him up and take straight out to pee. The crate must be big enough for him to stand, sit up, and turn around, not too big or too small. He shouldn't be wearing any collar while locked inside. This type of crate is not the travel kind. This crate should look like a bunny cage, steel bars. Also, the placement is very important, should be near your bed at night. During the day, it should be in the family area or where ever you spend most of your time. .... this should all help! |
