Bells I've been reading on this board about how to housebreak. I've seen mention of teaching the puppy to ring a bell to go outside. Would someone please tell me what kind of bells these are? Where to get them? Also, if all possibly explain to me how to do this training? Thanks in advance! |
I read that same thing on a website too. What was said was to get a counter bell -- one like you see on service counters that you ring when no one is available to help you. Ring the bell each time you go outside for potty time making a big deal about it. :) Lisa |
Thanks Lisa.... I wonder where I could buy one of those. I was thinking it was more like bells hanging off the door but I don't know where to get those either. |
You could probably locate one at an office supply store or restaurant supply store. I'll see if I can find an online link. Call bell is what it is! http://www.acemart.com/merchant.mv?S...Code=WNCCBEL-1 http://www.officedepot.com/txtSearch...hTxt=call+bell Lisa |
Thanks soooooooo much! I love this board. Heck I can even afford one of those. |
carters mom i sent you a PM KP_23 |
Thanks for the PM KP_23! After reading the post above, I believe someone has had too much caffeine this morning! ;) |
They actually make a dog door bell - shaped like a paw. The advantage of this is that it is bigger so your dog has more surface area to touch (I think it comes with an instructional pamphlet as well. Check out http://www.jefferspet.com - they might have it). An alternative method (explained fully on the "Take a Bow Wow" (available at http://www.dogwise.com ) video series) is to tie a small bell from your door handle to a rope with a dowl at the end and teach your dog to pull on the dowel, thereby ringing the bell. To teach this, you'll need to know a bit about operant conditioning and target training. A good book that teaches about clicker training, for example is "Quick Clicks" also avaiable at dogwise. You'll also need to teach the bell ringing behavior seperatly and then tie it together as a signal that your dog needs to go out. Although I've seen this demonstrated on tape and in person, I've never taught it to my own dogs. From what I understand, once your dog understands how to ring the bell, basically, what you want to do is have your dog ring the bell evey time you let him out to do his business. Eventally, the dog begin to associate the bell ringing with the going out and will begin to ring the bell without prompting from you. |
i agree cartersmom!! and rubbed a few people the wrong way nothing against the person just the actions, they speak lounder than words. maybe i'm to softhearted but i could never take food away from my baby as punishment. |
Did I miss something this morning? On the "Bell" thread, you said something about someone taking food away as punishment. I didn't see that....was it on the thread? |
Bell When I took my baby in to get a little bit of house training they told me about the bell theory. What the trainer told me to do was get a long piece of ribbon one that will hang from your door knob and go all the way to the floor. Buy a cheap .50 cent bell-like one that you would put on a homecoming mum or a jingle bell for Christmas. Tie the bell onto the bottom of the ribbon at the floor. Everytime you go outside the dog hears the bell. When you want to take her out go ring the bell. After a while when she hears that bell she will come running. I thought this was the silliest thing ever until one day I was home alone and I heard the bell (very faint) I thought someone was coming into my house until I went into the living room and saw Molli pawing at the bell. Lo and behold she did have to go. Takes a few weeks..but works great. Yorkies are very smart they will get the hang of it. |
Ringo: no it was on another post but that person is banned now! |
I've heard the bells used in the same way yorkielover described. You can easily make them yourself by buying the round bells and some rope and hanging them from the doorknob of the door. The idea is that the lowest bell will be in paw range of the puppy. Put peanut butter on the lowest bell to entice the puppy to go up to the bell. The moment they touch the bell, get excited and take the puppy out. After awhile the puppy will begin to understand that when they ring the bells they get to go outside. I've heard that most dogs catch on within a week and it works as a good signal to let you know they have to go out. I tried it with Bentley, but we have stairs leading down to our door and he likes to sit at the top of the stairs when he needs to go out, he doesn't like to go down the stairs and hang out by the door. I've also heard the bells work great when you go visit someone. YOu just hang the bells on their door and your puppy now knows where it needs to go out at this new place. |
Hi I use this methood for Chelsey... I think i got the tip from someone here. Can rember who. Chester has not picked up on it yet and I don't think he will. I bought a small bell on a look and put it on one of those hooks you can get from the hardware store that leave no marks on your wall when you remove it. I measured were to put it so that chelsey and hit it with her paw. What i did was everytime I let her out to go potty. I would let her stand near the door. I would ring the bell with her paw and give her a treat and then say out side. Well I think I did this for two weeks. And then one day I had given her her food and closed her crate or at least I though I did. I went outside to the garage came back and was doing the dishes.. and hearing this ring, ding, ring. I could not figure out what it was. After ten min I went to investigate an I saw Chelsey at the back door hiting the bell with her paw... WOWO. Well now she rings the bell more to go out and play not so much as potty. Chester does not ring it at all. I tried with him too, but I guess he doesn't care :( he just likes the treats. the bell was like $2 bucks. you can use anything. X-mass bells just put it on a loop and hang from the door or wall close to the door where they will go out. |
