I'm about to LOSE IT!!!!!!!!! Maggie's barking is really working my nerves. Seriously. She is so possessive and territorial. she will bark at her own fart, I swear it!!!! To make it worse, there are dogs in my neighborhood that just sit outside all day barking. ALLLLLLLLLLL DAY!!! As soon as she hears one of them, she takes off to the door and barks her head off. As soon as I let her outside to potty, she is barking...I guess to let them all know she is outside???? I have NEVER had a dog that barked so much. Then I met my husband and he had a min pin that barked a lot. I was able to break him of it for the most part. I broke him of it by teaching him to speak on command...and when he would "speak" without being given the command, he was reprimanded for it. well...that method just isn't working for Maggie. She is just a mouthy MOUTHY dog. It is seriously driving me NUTS. I have tried the water bottle. and if she see's me coming with it..she will stop. But even if I am sitting on the couch with it in my hands...if she hears one of the other dogs barking...or any other noise that might provoke her...she will take off running full speed and yap her head off. until I get close to her with the water bottle. any suggestions???? It kills me because Tessa is SOOOOO quiet. she never barks. I just hope that Maggie does not teach her these bad habits. I honestly think a lot of it is Maggie trying to be the pack leader. She knows mom rules the coop...but she definitely does all she can to be 2nd in line!!!!!!!!! |
You are not alone Mandee! I'd like some advice in this also. I have the same problem with Diddy. We can't even watch a TV show that has any kind of animals on it or he barks at the TV. |

have you tried putting pennies or soemthing like that in a can and shaking it every time she starts? |
have ya tried the metal pan with metal spoon? hit the spoon to the pan, makes a loud noise and they hate it! or pennies in a tin can. |
Rudy can be the same way. ;) I got a soda can and put rocks in it. Taped the top shut so the rocks won't come out. Everytime he barks, we shake the can and at least for that moment he stops barking. He's afraid of the can's noise. I did this outside one morning when the neighbor dogs were barking their heads off also. Rudy was right there joining along and I shook the can. OMG, they all stopped barking. :D At least for a little while. But we really haven't been consistent with that. Guess we should have those cans all over the house and yard. :D Good Luck, girls. :goodluck: |
That reminds me of my sister's Maltese lol. I would let her know if anybody knows how to break the barking non-stop habit. She barks a lot at everything to the point that we suspect she is OCD (maybe she is?). My parents cannot even come back from grocery shopping and put bags on the floor or else she will bark her head off until you keep each and every item! She barks at airplane flying by (serious!), she barks at looking at a dog's picture on the monitor (just a picture, no sound), barks at the pail just because we used it and couldn't put it back to the exact spot that was originally placed, just barks at everything that you can think of. |
on the show, it's the dog or me, she used a can of compressed air, like to clean your keyboard. This seemed to work as the pup never expected it out of no where. It can't hurt to try it! Good luck. |
I need help too. I'm doing the water bottle right now and tell her quiet when I squirt her. I try to be consistant. Sometimes she still barks as she's backing away while I'm squirting her. Don't know if it will break the habit or not. I keep trying anyway. The barking drives my whole family crazy too. |
I have my big boy Teddy at around 16 lbs who even will bark in his sleep. He is almost three and wears a bark shock collar all time.If I put it on he doesn't bark but if he does forget he gets a shock. You can't use it on a little dog BUT the battery was failing and my Chelsey is a big time barker soooo I tried it on her. It shocked her and she hasn't barked much since and that was 6 months ago. She still barks but not as much. Of course I don't recommend this for a dog under 12 lbs. But with these two of mine the pan, spray bottle, spray collar, pennies in a can, screaming, and multiple other things didn't work. If anyone has a different cure for constant barking I would like to try it. |
OMG that's my biggest problem too!! Bentley barks soo much and with so much effort at the door bell, his whole body shakes!! It's so loud and I get mortified when guests come over. I'm afraid he will start teaching Louie this bad habbit. I've tried the ultra sonic beeper and pennies in a can, and it doesnt work. I would LOVE to hear some suggestions too!! |
Maggie sounds just like KaCee. My BF calls her a "little *itch" because she barks at everything! If someone leaves the room for a significant amount of time (like to use the restroom) she barks her head off when they re-enter. She barks if the wind blows, she barks if the phone rings, she barks if you drop something. If you find something that works for you, let me know! |
I had this same problem with my girl up until today. It got extremely bad since we moved to a new home where our neighbors let their dogs roam free (:thumbdown). After a while she would bark at anything, including my boy running to play fetch. We finally reached the breaking point and got a bark-collar. Before this whole barking mess I'd be the first hollarin' about how mean it is to use one of these, but it worked immediately. The one we picked is rated for 8lbs+ and she is on the bigger side (probably 9lbs right now). She actually tested it out seeing how much she could bark before the shock really bothered her. After 4 tries, she quit and now we can play outside without the barking driving our neighbors (and landlord!) nuts. So, if all else fails and the pup is the right weight for it, I would recommend the bark-collar... never thought I would, but it works and fast! |

There must be a thing with "Bentleys" and door bells. I logged in to see if there was a solution to the doorbell dillema...It's making me insane... We live in an apartment and if anyone comes to visit, or we have food delivered or even if maintenance comes to do something to the apartment, I'm constantly having anxiety because he's barking like crazy. I don't know what to do. He backs away from the spray bottle even while I'm spraying... The can of coins he continues to bark at too... |
I tried "The Barksolver" for a little while last year and it seemed to work for a little while...I went ahead and pulled it out again to see if it will work... |
