Won't Stop Biting! I need some serious help here. Bear is cutting his baby teeth&when we play together he bites me like crazy! It really, really hurts too. I've tried spraying him in the face with water, but that doesn't work. I've also tried sticking my finger further down his throat (I've read that this is supposed to work well) but that doesn't stop him either. I've tried gently closing his mouth with my hand&saying "NO BITING!" but he just thinks I'm trying to play with him! Any advice? |
Make sure he has plenty of chew toys/bones. If he starts to bite when you are playing, say NO BITE and get up and stop playing right away. Sometimes, ignoring them can work. If they see you stop playing, maybe he will get the hint. On a positive note, they DO outgrow it- it just takes time! |

I've heard the following from a few places, including the woman who teaches my obediance class, on bite inhibition: When the dog is play biting and bites hard, yelp (like a puppy) and walk away from the dog. Keep working at it and yelping on the hardest bite, even if its not hard, until the dog doesn't bite at all. Dogs are supposed to learn bite inhibition from their mom and their litter mates and usually have a problem with it if taken away too soon. So it's up to the new owner to teach the same. I've been doing it with Harley and I am pretty sure it is working. She no longer bites my roommate at all, and she only bites my hands when I ask if she wants to play. Sometimes she does get carried away and bites hard. I say "ow" in a high-pitched girl voice (no offense :D ) and pull away. Then she'll act like she wants to bite, but stops and licks instead. |
It does hurt Aiden is always biting my Dashund in the pvts. Pongo is sooo patient with him. He's 12, and not to be blunt ,but the "thing" is right there for the bitting. LOL :D I'm always scolding him,but to no avail, he does'nt stop. I agree with the other posts. When I try to stop them from "playing" nothing works,except giving them each a chewey. My Elvira was a biter. I have the scars to prove it. I finally started sticking a toy in her mouth every single time she tried to nip, and that helped, but finally, and don't you laugh, she bit me and grabbed her little face, and I BIT her nose! (I'm 59, and I had never, ever, had a dog that bit like that!) Since then, she'll start getting fiesty, and I tell her I'll get your nose, and she backs down! You should have seen the shocked look on that puppy's face when I did that. The vet told me to grab her, and hold her completely still against my chest (faceing out) until she went limp and quit. But she though that was great fun. You may want to try that though. Biting her was just a last resort. |
The no bite technique worked really well with regan, I bought her this little fish toy at wal-mart (the small one) & I put it in the freeser over night & it has really helped her teething. |

As my puppy school teacher says, treat it like a felony offense. Every time baby nips, say "no", put him on the floor, walk away and turn your back to him for 30 seconds. Do not acknowledge his presence during the 30 seconds. Don't look at him, don't talk to him, nothing. After 30 seconds, return to cuddling, playing, whatever it was that you were doing. The second he nips, repeat the ignoring. I did this with Gracie and it did not take long at all to break her of the nipping. But you have to be very consistent. If you are not making any headway in a couple of weeks, I would suggest consulting with a dog trainer for other options. |
