walking on a leash carter refuses to walk on a leash. i've tried taking him just up and down the sidewalk in front of my apartment. he just sits there and won't move. i try calling him and everything, but he won't budge. how can i get him to move? usually dogs have a problem with *pulling* on the leash, not staying still. i want to take him on walks! |
How old is he? |
Maybe encouraging him with a few tidbit treats to come along :) With persistance they usually get it! Keep trying..good luck |
he's 11 weeks |
lol I bet he looks alot like KaCee on a leash! Just this week, I started to use one on her. She refuses to move and crouches as close to the ground as she can get! For awhile each day, I've put the leash on her and just let her drag it around. If you do this outside, the leash will get "caught" on sticks, rocks, etc and slowly he'll get used to the "tugging" **Just make sure you are out there with him so he doesn't get hung up on anything!** After he's comfortable dragging the leash around, pick up the end and bribe him to come to you with treats! |
It will come, believe me! Mine did the same thing, and I had a harness--no neck pull--and I would kind of pull up on the harness and say, "Come on" and then pull him. She is 4 months old, and just the last two days has she started smelling, etc when we go on the walk. It does come, it is just new to them, as everything is. I thought I would never get her to go down the stairs, but after helping her for a few days she now readily goes down. They are just like babies must teach them everything! Pat |
Mayme refused to walk on a leash for the longest time. We're just now starting to get really good at it and she's 7 months. I highly recommend getting a harness over using just a collar. It was much easier, and she followed my lead instead of trying to pull on the collar and choking herself. |

I think that he may just be too young. When I first got Honey, she was scared of the leash. I use to tie it up to her just so she would get use to having a leash. She refuse to touch the leash and would crawl under tables and cry. I've come to realize, she doesn't like having a leash tied up to her collar, but a harness was okay. Once I put the harness on and took her out doors a few times, she learned to like it. She now knows that the leash means we are going outside for a walk. I would wait until he was a bit older. Honey didn't begin liking her leash until she was 6 months old. |
When Kramer was that young, he wouldn't walk on a leash either. I would take him out every day for a 5 min. walk, i would tug on him and if he moved a little say good boy and give him a treat, he eventually got better and better every day. Sometimes i had to drag him a little, but he did have a harness so no harm to him and now he is great on a leash. |
I'm so glad that this is common. We just got our puppy on Wed and yesterday we tried to walk her and she did not walk! I just thought that all dogs automatically knew how to do this- I'm obviously learning fast! We went and purchased a harness last night- I didn't want to tug on her neck. We'll keep trying.:) |
I definately would try it every day! Mine learned after one week at three months old. Even put it on and walk around the house with him or her. It will come, and pretty soon they will bug the heck out of you to go for a walk! Pat |
Generally loves to walk, at first he did not. He is now 7 months old and wants to go out no matter how bad the weather is. However, he still fights the harness. I really think mine is a nudist at heart :) He will not allow any clothing on him no matter how much snow (11 inches) and while he does not bite when I put the harness on, he will not help. He will curl his feet or stretch out his legs so I have to work to put it on him. If I leave it on after the walk he will sulk and try to rub it off on the drapes. Once I get the leash on the harness, he is at the door wanting to go out. It took a lot of tries to get him walking on the leash. Treats help. I am now trying to teach him not to chase the squirrels, rabbits, robins or anything else that is furry or has wings. He is doing better but it is just practice and time.:) |
Leash It takes some time but my puppy caught on. He would not like to walk when the ground is wet or covered in snow. Now that it is mostly dry outside, he is fine. He still hesitates in certain parts of town. Again, it will come with more practice. Marty is almost 8 months and just now getting the hang of it. Good Luck! |
My dog walks me! He's only 12 wks old so I'm glad that it's normal also for him to not want to walk. He just will lay down and look up and me with the "if you want me to move you have to pick me up look" lol |
