Snow, rain and potty....help! Ok, so a few weeks ago we got a little girl. I instantly started crate training and outside only potty training. This has been going rather well I think. We have accidents every once in a while but we do watch her like a hawk when she is not crated..... Then today it rained. I almost panicked....is she gonna go in the rain?? Oh lordy, the thought of snow and minus 40 hit me like a ton of bricks! Now I need to think fast on what to do. Do your Yorkies go out in rain or snow? If I continued the outside training and then on rainy days or on cold winter days put a pee pad/litter box in the garage....would that work? Or be confusing? Shoot....I MUST sort this out, lol. I need advice. |
I trained mine to go outside only after getting sick on the peepee pads. Both of mine love the snow and will go outside in the rain. I just watch them when they are outside and bundle them up when its cold outside. Usually when it rains they are very quick to do their business. I hope this helps! |
When I first started outside training Jamie I had to show him I meant business. The first time it rained we stood outside for almost 30 minutes with me saying "hurry up Jamie go potty". He kept trying to run back inside and I kept putting him back out with me in the rain. Finally he got it and pottied. When we went inside I had to change clothes and blowdry him. BUT he learned a very important lesson that day and now when it rains he runs outside and goes REALLY fast so we can come back in out of the rain. |
We pad trained Toto first. She was only 1 1/2 lbs. at 16 wks. and we were fearful of germs & disease. She did great ... I won't say it was easy, but with constant hits & misses, and lots of little treats & praise, she soon got the hang of it. When she was old enough to be leash trained, we began letting her also potty outside so now it's either/or! ;) I might add, we don't like to go out in the rain/snow either. :p Good luck and keep us updated! |
Mine go out no matter what, at first they dont want to, but will go. They get pretty fast when its nasty. They dont seem to mind the cold too much, of course they have warm coats ! |
Bella will go in rain, snow, whatever. Nothing seems to faze her, she's just so easy - I'm lucky!:) |
Ok. Thanks for the input. I think I will just keep on going with the outside only training and if winter hits and she won't do it.....I'll change it up. I am SO not used to this all. My other dog is a 11 year old Collie cross and she is SO easy with everything! This Yorkie is like having a baby in the house, lol. |
Yes Buddy goes out in everything. He loves the snow, cold weather etc but hates the rain so he has learned that as soon as he does his thing we're back home in a minute. So he goes immediately when it rains. They are smart little buggers these yorkies. |
