Am I doing this completely wrong? So I am trying to start potty training my yorkie and am so completely new to this. I just want to make sure I am not doing this completely wrong! I take him out to go potty every hour at least, while I'm home. When I'm not home he is in his crate. He's had a few accidents in his crate overnight (I guess because he's still so young he can't hold it). I try and wake up every 3-4 hours and take him out, though. Still... he doesn't go potty every single time I take him out. When he does, I do the whole "good puppy!" and give him a treat. But if we're in my house and he has to go potty, he just goes. Most of the time it's just a little bit, which makes me think it has more to do with not consciously knowing he has to go potty. But sometimes he goes numero dos in hidden corners, behind furniture. I only yell No when I catch him in the act, but I'm not sure if he's catching on. Tips? Tricks? What to do??:confused: |

he's 9-10 weeks. i don't give him any food for at least a few hours before bedtime, and i take him out to potty before i crate him |
Look like you got a good start. How long have you have the little one for? He's had a few accidents in his crate overnight Removed all bedding in the crate. It sound cruel but it really help.. and it's just for now. The crate might be to big for him so he have room to pee on one side and sleep in the other side. Add a shoes box or small box in the crate to make it smaller. Who want to sleep is in own pee? It will help too. Avoid using ammonia based products to clean dog urine. One of the ingredients of dog urine is ammonia and he may well be encouraged to re-offend in the same area!!!:eek: Also do not CARRY the dog when going to pee-pee area.. he need to fallow you to remember where to go. You can buy a play pen and live him there with a pee-pad when unsupervise. The less accident he have .. the easier it will be. Good luck |
Ohh yeah I have been carrying him outside. I know if I let him down in the middle of the night he would go without waiting to get outside. How should I deal with that? Luckily his crate does have an adjustable divider, so he has about enough room to lay down, turn around, but not too much extra space. I've been thinking about trying a pee pad in my extra bedroom with a baby gate in the doorway so 1. he doesn't feel isolated and 2. he'll have a lot of room to run around when i can't always watch him. i feel so bad keeping him in a crate more than just overnight. will he know to use the pee pad instinctively? |

You can carry the cage closer to the door before letting him out for now. That should reduce the chance of accident in the way to the door. He should be using the pee-pad right away. Don't over change the pee-pad a the beginning, If it smell like pee he will go back to that spot. And he his still very young. Some dog take longer than other. Be persistent. |
Bailey is 6months old and still having trouble with potty training! He goes out side now but if we dont let him out at the right time he just goes anywhere... we always try and say no and put him outside and i think he is catching on that he NEEDS to go outside to potty. He is dry through the night which i am happy about and 9/10 times he does it ouside as we know when to let him out and he is holding him self better.. just carry on with the hard work and it will all pay off in the end. hugs an kisses to your little yorkie who is eva so cute :D |
