Puppy litter box Has anyone ever trained their yorkie to go in a puppy litter box? My fiance's mom said its a good idea for smaller dogs. My fiance and I are considering it, but still not sure. They do fine with paper and our backyard kind of sucks and they can get out from under the fence and I don't want that. |
I haven't tried it yet but I may just do that. Right now we are taking her outside and she has some house accidents...but not too much. We are crate training. I did look up online a bit about the puppy litter boxes and it does seem like a good idea. Glad you started this thread...I'm gonna be sure to read up on here! |
I have not, but my mother has a puppy littler box for her mini pincher. They live in Cyprus and Its fab. She leaves it out of a nite and if they go out in the car they pop it in the back so the puppy can use it if she wants. She also has removed the box outside and just has a bit of litter on the drive, so the puppy always goes to the same spot, she does not need to worry about pooping in the flower bed or on the grass. hehe!! |
I have read from some who tried the litter boxes. Just be careful that the pups do not eat the litter. That seems to be a problem, also they like to play in it and scatter it. Perhaps a pad in a litter pan would be better. Let us know what you find that works. |
I was thinking of just putting newspaper down in the bottom of a pan so that way they still know to go to the bathroom and it's cleaner for everyone. When we get back home were going to go out and buy something to place the paper in. Maybe until we can get to the store we'll use cardborad. |

We use a litter box for Wrigley, but we line it with pee pee pads. We were worried she might try and eat the litter and it would be more of a mess, it works great for us! |

We do the same thing, disposable pads in the litter box. Works Great!!!:thumbup: |
Mingtoy goes in a litterbox with pee pad in it . |
Both my boys are pad trained, and I found it really easy to train them. They also will go outside in the warmer months. We get so much snow here in the winter that taking them out would be a pain and they would get soaked everytime. I use a couple pee pads in a dog litter box, and I put a 2-liter bottle of water so they have something to lift their leg on. It works out great for us! It's very easy to keep clean, I just wash it out with Clorox Clean-ups. |
Is the litter boxes you guys are talking about just a little pan, like you'd use for a cat or do they have particular dog boxes? I have a small litter box that I was thinking of lining with a pee pad to have out when we travel to my parents house where she may have to be in a xpen on carpet. She is pee pad trained so I guess it would be trial and error to see if the box works well... :) |
I trained my chis to go in a litter box but with paper towels or puppy pads in, they also use puppy pads and go outside. |

We litter trained Buddy using the Purina Second Nature dog litter pan and litter. You are right at first they kind of want to play in it and eat it but we just kept discouraging him and I even mixed some bitter apple gel with water and lightly sprayed it so it would taste bad and shortly after he quit chewing on it. I have loved it!! It allows me to confine him to a room or two while we are gone all day, or at night so he has the opportunity to be free and still not make any messes on my floor. Now that it is warmer he has started going potty outside more but if someone is not paying attention when he needs out he just runs back and uses the litter box. Buddy is currently 7 months old and we started using at 3 months old. He has not had an accident in my house since he was probably 4 months old. From what I have read on the forum that is pretty darn good. I will say once you start you need to just do that until they get used to it or they get a bit confused. Plus if you have a boy once he starts lifting his leg you will have to watch out because once in a while he will be standing in the litter box and pee over the edge onto the floor!! |
We have two girls. Mike and I are going to be picking up something this week for them to use. I love the idea of the litter box because at night they always have to go potty and at 2 am I really don't want to walk upstairs and let them outside into the dark cold yard. |
