First day of puppie training Hi Everyone! It's me Barclay's mom. Today was our first day of puppy training. There were 11 puppies in class. Barclay was the only Yorkie. There were 3 labs, a pinchon, miniature boxer, s**tz-zu, and a few beagles. Barclay has been with me three weeks, however, he has never had socialization with other dogs until today. He was SOOOOO aggressive. He took down the two labs, and literally put the beagles into hiding behind their moms. I felt so bad because I could tell that the owners were trying to keep their dogs away from Barclay. Someone in the class mentioned that they had NEVER seen such a thing in a Yorkie. I am a first time owner, and tell me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was normal for him to play and jump, yes, he did bite, but not to the point of hurting the other dogs, isn't that what they are suppose to do??? When it came time to take them away from each other and pick up their leashes for training, Barclay was writhing to get back into action with the dogs. He was barking and snarling like I have never seen. When I tried to pick him up he was writhing and twisting trying to bite me to put him down which is not like him at all. Has anyone else had a Yorkie that loved play aggessively with other dogs? Right now, he is sound asleep in my arms making his little puppy noises. He is so adorable, but I also saw another side of him today that was a little frightening. Please reassure me that this is normal playing, the trainer said it was normal, but that women's comment keeps eating at me that my Yorkie was unusual?? |
I think they are jealous that your dog is tougher than their dogs!!! :p:p Ok this is just my opinion. I dont take time trying to change the way my dogs act, I only try to control it to an extent. Bella is VERY aggressive that just her personality since day 1. Its not an issue she has never hurt anyone but acts like she will eat your face off and takes no crap from anyone. Diggy is more laid back and takes a lot of crap and thats just him. I think Yorkies are all unique and as an owner of 2, I try to let their personalites flourish. Unless of course it gets out of control then i step in. Who cares if they "like" Barkley if your happy and he is happy then let him be BARKLEY :) Good luck with classes :) |
did you speak with one of the trainers at the class? That might be a great place to start. My Roxy is a bossy girl - she recently met my brother's huge golden in their house & Roxy had this boy scared immediately & he wouldn't look her in the eyes, after she growled at him only once |
Puppie Training Thank you both for answering, your replies make me feel much better. I love Barclay's personality. He is totally unique. He is so sweet and I feel he is just socialable and not afraid to have fun with other dogs. I met a women in the park last evening, she had a beautiful medium size 9 month old beagle. They played for about an hour. Barclay was using the same behavior as he had in puppy training and they had so much fun. She said I was blessed because he was so playful and not timid. We are going to schedule some playdates in the park on the weekend. Needless to say, he was exhausted last night. He fell asleep at about 9:00PM in his crate and slept there until 5:00AM this morning. I think he is just socialble and loves to play. I guess I am lucky. Thank you again for anwering my post, I love this site, so much reassurance and knowledge. I am here everyday checking out the threads, it has taught me so much. Everyone here is a wealth of knowledge and experience. |
