Can Yorkie be trained to bark at door to go potty? Hello! I was thinking about trying "bell training" for our 5 month old Yorkie. We have her 98% potty trained on the pee-pads and with the warmer weather coming we are transitioning her to go outside. We have a 7 yr old bichon who barks at the door when she wants to go outside. We LOVE that she does this. Does anyone have a Yorkie who does this too? Are they difficult to train to do this? They seem to be incredibley smart and our Mariah is doing really good learning "tricks" like sit, roll over, etc. I read somewhere that training a dog to bark on command is a good thing...because you can also then train them to "NOT bark" because they understand what the word "bark" means. I think that would be helpful. At certain times I could definitely use the "NO barking" command for Mariah! I recently read a post from someone who taught their Yorkie to "bark" and now they won't stop...lol...that would be bad. I'm scared to try this now! :) |
Mine ring a bell. Loki learned in like 2 days. Sammy took a couple months to get it but she does it now. If she rings and we ignore her (because she rings for attention) she will bark at us if she really wants to go out. Anyway, I have the Tell Bells on my website Barkaholics — Welcome and Isabel on here has the hanging bells on hers The Bows and Tails Boutique |
Tessa barks or whines but if we aren't paying attention to her then she will ring her bell to go out. I never really trained her to bark or whine, it was just something she started doing. We did train her to ring the bell though and it took a couple of weeks for her to catch on. |
My one malt was using the bell and then stopped. :( But they do come to us and the maltese sit up in a begging position to be let out and the Yorkie is very verbal about wanting to go out. Barks at ya several times and then heads for the door always turning around to be certain that you are following. |

lexi uses the pads in the house, and she also rings the bell when she wants to go outside, whether to pee pee or just harass the neighbors. |
wow, this bell thing sounds really cool. I've never tred it (or heard of it). Sammy stares and barks at us when he wants something. I swear he can tell time. WHen he barks, we say "What do you want?" and if it's near five he'll run to his bowl. Other times, he'll run to the door. I also heard you can train them to bark, but I didn'thave enough patience to do it a couple of months when I tried. He wasn't "getting it". He barks at everything that moves, even if it's nothing major. |
We use bells, but Luna will come and talk to me if I am around... more like she will use the bells to make sure I listen to her, but if I am around, she will come and make all this cute sounds until I ask her, do you want to go out??? then she barks, and there we go... It is crazy but I find myself talking to my dogs a lot!! and the weird thing is they talk to me back!:D Yorkies are very very smart (sometimes too smart!), and can be trained as you wish, but also have a very stubborn mind of their own, and can make decisions by themselves! If the pooch decision is the same as yours, you are lucky, if not, well, you better be patient!;) |
