obedience training !! Coopers first class was last night. I expected it to be a disaster. He is afraid of people and dogs bigger then he is. But he sat between my feet when we were listening to the instructor. He never made a sound even when a couple naughty puppies were being mouthy !!! LOL He was very attentive and seemed to take to the heel comand very quickly, in fact I cant help wonder if he had some training before . There was 2 other yorkies at this class, Cooper was the bigest. One was 4.5 lbs and 7 months old. She was a cutie, but I think all the dogs were cute.. |
Congrats! You'll have to keep us updated each week. My guy was skittish like that too, but he got better with every class. |
I'm starting Gracie's training class on May 8th. I'm so excited, but at the same time nervous because she can get really hyper from time to time. I hope she doesn't act like a NUT! :D |
Max had his first training class last night as well. More of an orientation, but came away with some good ideas that I already started. I'm really hoping I can get my "little terror" under control! |
Good for all of you guys! It's a great bonding experience for the two of you too. |
And an afterthought because there are so many of you new to obedience training on this thread: Always question your instructor if you believe they are having you do something that is not in the best interest of your dog. When I took my first couple classes, the instructors were good, but they were ignorant of small-dog issues. Like a collapsing trachea. They had me hook the leash up to his collar and give him minor 'corrections' when he needed them. I didn't know any better, so I figured they knew what they were talking about. It wasn't until someone on YT questioned me on it that I changed my ways. He now uses only a harness with the leash hooked in front. But sometimes he coughs, and I'm not sure if it's reverse sneezing or trachea problems. If it's trachea, there's a chance it's my fault. |
Toby just finished the basic obedience class and did wonderfully, taking first place! He is also skiddish of other dogs and a wee bit aggressive. I thought for sure it would be a disaster but it has really helped him a lot!!!! We are moving on to intermediate training next month!!!! I am sure he will enjoy the classes once he sees your confidence in him!:) |
Glad I'm not alone We have been considering training Roufianna for awhile . Her problem is aggressive behavior. She is all of 7.13 lbs. now and thinks she is Cujo. She prefers to go after Rotties but will stoop to Dob's and Shep's. Seems whatever can swallow her whole is fair game. I now, in the "Cesare" tradition, grab her by the chest and turn her belly up till she calms down. After a few seconds she looks a little embarrassed and I let her up. Having her neutered has helped a bit but I think you guys are on the right tack in getting pro-help. Stephen Roufianna's dad. |

Gracie coughs too, and I took her to the vet because i was concerned it was something with her trac, but it is just reverse sneezing. |

It's interesting that they said you could use a head harness, or "gentle leader." I had never heard of them until recently, but I think that's the way to go for dogs that have a problem pulling. They are a little risky, and I agree you're smart to avoid them if you can, but I've seen good results from them. I started using one on my Lab, and he's a different dog on leash. He used to pull until he was hoarse, and now he walks nicely on a loose leash. I'm real careful not to jerk him, though. |
I asked at my first class with cooper about the collar. I told the trainer I was concerned about hurting him by jerking. She told me to keep moving the collar closer to under his jaw. The collar gets tangled in his hair easily so I am always watching for it to be to tight so I am always moving it. Plus I hardly have to tug on it for Cooper to get the hint. However theres 2 other Yorkies in the class , both younger and smaller then Cooper and I dont believe there owners are aware of the danger. One of them was stuborn and just sat when she tried to make him walk with her so she kinda just slid him along using the leash. It kinda worried me. |

No he doesn't pull, he was really very good. He sat between my feet and looked around, and seemed to pay attention to what the trainer was saying. In fact I have only had him since Dec. 2. I am not sure he may have had some training before. When I tell him to heel he trots right beside me flashing quick glances at me constantly . In fact I have to go work with him some this morning ,My trainer says we have to work with the dogs 10 minutes 3 times a day ! I have been getting about 15 minutes once a day . |
Wow, he sounds like a champ. Yeah, that's what I've heard. 10-15 minutes 3 times a day is better than one session for a half hour. That keeps it fun and holds their interest. I'm always amazed at how fast they learn. It may not always seem like it, but by the end of the class they are always a lot better. |
I'm excited to start Gracie's first class! It is not till May 8th, so I have a couple more weeks to wait..... ;) |
