Pulling on leash & barking! Just got back from a walk with Pixie and she was particularly bad today! she was pulling like mad..I mean.. she literally runs on her back legs and her front feet hardly touch the floor! I keep pulling her back but i feel so mean tugging on her when she's such a tiny girl! and it doesn't make much difference anyway. She also barks..well..its more of a scream actually.. at most dogs she meets..it's pretty embarassing! Anyone got any tips? I have used the stones in a bottle trick which does sometimes work at distracting her somewhat..She's so bold though for a little thing..her tail is right over her back and she's shouting at every dog that crosses her path! She seems worse when we are walking our Staffy with her..not sure why as he is well behaved and doesn't bark at all or pull on his lead..but she seems to feed off him and gets more excited..:confused: |
A non-retractable leash and a good harness helps. Harley actually has the same problem, and I addressed this to his trainer. She said you really have to build a strong "watch me", and when he does act out on our walks to do the "watch me" to get his attention. Also walking in the opposite direction of the distracion helps, even if it wasn't the direction you meant to go. |
My Lexie loves the bottle with pebbles in it. She thinks it's a toy. So that never worked for me. Maybe a shorter lead so that you're right above her. My little Molly likes to bark to get my attention. It seems that is her way of playing, but I'm going to have to learn to stop that because it may get annoying. Right now it's a little cute, but I know it has to stop. |
My husband says walking Baxter is like flying a kite because 1/2 the time he's flying off the ground. I think it is just going to take patience. When he starts acting really badly I pick him up and carry him a little bit and he hates it. So he is learning that behaving means staying on the ground. |
My girl Violet was really bad on the leash and last time I took her out I walked in front of her (walking backwards facing her) almost the whole time putting my foot out to block her if she tried to walk faster than me. The last block I let her walk normal and there was a HUGE improvement. We still need to work on it a little more but I am very pleased at the progress. Before I couldn't even walk to the neighbors’ house without her choking herself and/or going off the path and would usually end up carrying her while the others finished their walk. It also helped a little with the barking since she could see my face, but mainly the pulling which was our biggest problem anyways. |
I have the same problem with Izzy. He will pull, tug, bark, when he sees another dog. If they are close enough, we will walk over to the other dog so he can meet them, other times I have to try to calm him down. I know what you mean about being embarassing. Its really bad with squirrels, birds and cats. :rolleyes: |
