Im starting to get worried about potty training
 

i have read over and over all the problems people are having like after 3 to 4 month and in some cases 3 years old...some people cant get their yorkies to learn to hold it in their crate or in their house untill they get home...so far my little guy has done great! we have had 2 accidents but they were my fault. he was giving me all the signs i just...i dont know i just didnt act fast enough. but is this going to be really that bad? how long will i train untill i know i can leave my yorkie alone for longer periods of time? i have an 8 week old so i know 3 hours is pushing it. i read somewhere that eventually you can leave them no more than 8 hours and they should be fine. so why is everyone having so much trouble with theirs???!!? im starting to freak out a little. is there anyone who had full success and can trust their fur babies to stay in control? i have full faith that one day i can in his crate. but i am reading about so much trouble that im losing hope. anyone let me know if they have success stories and how long it took for them to be totally potty trained! i need good news!

I wish I could give you good news but I have had Yorkies for 18 years and I have never had one that I could say was 100% potty trained and would never go in the house!! I'm sure someone will come on and say theirs is completely trained but in my experiences they are very smart and try and get their way. One of my yorkies learned to do a fake squat outside so I think that she is going potty and then she comes in and hides and pees!! I finally figured it out when I checked her privates one day and they were completely dry even though she squatted!! I hope you prove me wrong and have a little guy that is an angel, if you do , consider yourself lucky! I've just lived with wee wee pads, diapers and belly bands!!:D

Snickers is almost 5 months.. and he is doing pretty good..
When he is in his crate in the night he holds it up no problems so ever.. and in the daytime i work like this.
After playing i take him out for a pee..then i put him in his crate to sleep.. and he will rest when i take him out first thing i do take him outside again.. then he can play again.. in the morning i walk him first so he done everything.. and then i give him his first meal.. after the meal he goes in his crate to relax and he fall asleep,. cause he is to tired of the walking and the eating. I have 2 other dogs so he plays alot with my other dog and also with me.
After i train with him the puppyclasses commands in the afternoon i play with him after and then take him outside again.
He know very well that he needs to do outside. He fakes it sometimes too when we go outside,... casuse his peepee isnt wet then,.. but he knows he gets a tread when he does it. :)
I hope mine will be potty trained for 100%,. but u never know. When i sometimes go out and cant take him with him,. i lreave him in his crate for about 2 hours and he is just sleeping.. he doesnt do anything in there..
but i also heard that boys are harder to potty train then girls..
Also if you have a garden then its easier.

i think that ther can always be an accident, but it would not be good if he keeps doing it because he wants too..
also when he does is inside.. he is ashamed, cause he knows he is not allowed..

laceys sister was 99% trained at about 5 months but lacey still goes in the house once in a while, although i do have to say she has been ill and has had a couple of surguries that have caused the set back for her. they are both a year old now. and i do have to add that lacey has laways slept all night and her sister still gets up at least once to go out.

Logan is 8 months old and does NOT have full run of the house. Even after I've taken him outside, and he's peed and pooped, he can still potty inside the house after coming back inside. There is no rhyme or reason for it. He is either crated or tethered to his crate in the kitchen when I can keep an eye on him. Or we go outside and play. Sometimes he sits with us on the couch after he's gone potty outside. He hasn't had an accident in almost a week, but he's also been crated more since I just had surgery and have been in bed quite a bit.

First off I have to mention that my puppy is a yo yo poo (3/4 yorkie, 1/4 min. poodle) so my situation might be a little different. Miley is 5 pounds and close to 6 months old now. She stays in her crate to sleep at night and holds it all night long. We did have problems with her pottying in there when we had it lined with a blanket, but no accidents since we took it out. We restrict her area to our kitchen and dining area and she doesn't have accidents. I'm a stay at home mom so I'm there with her most of the time to let her out, but there are occasions when I have appointments and errands to run that will keep me gone for up to 5 hours. She stays in her crate while I'm gone and does a great job holding it. Once I return, I don't acknowledge her and get excited until after I've let her out and she has never pottied out of excitement. I feed her on a twice a day schedule and let her out 15 minutes after eating and have had great success with it. That's not to say I don't worry and constantly keep my eye on her. I just always make sure that she stays in whatever room I am in if she isn't in the kitchen. So the main steps I have taken is giving treats outside when she goes, restrict her area, let her exercise and immediately use the potty, crate train her when I'm gone or simply need to get some cleaning done, don't get too excited, and take her out often. She has been wonderful and can't remember when she had her last accident!!!!!! Now I just have to work on getting her to let me know when she needs to go instead of me just letting her out all the time. I'm sure you will have success, just be persistent!

My little guy Jeter is 6 month old, I have had him since he was 9 weeks old and he has only had 3 accidents since he has come home to us. They were all in the first month of getting him too. I am a stay at home mother so I think that has helped getting him trained so well so soon. I have alway's taken him outside to potty, never had a pee pee pad in the house because my husband did not even want to hear about letting a dog get trained to potty in the house. My mother has 2 girl Yorkies age 2 and 5 1/2, they are potty trained to go outside too. She is able to be home all day also so it works well for her that way. My sister in law has a Shih Tzu ( age 3 1/2)and a Chihuahua ( age 5) that use a pee pee pad for potty time and she has alway's complained that they will go in other places too in the house. I think that is why My husband refused to have a pee pee pad in our house.

My lulu was fully and I mean fully trained at 8 months. She went out in rain, snow etc to do her business. Loved it. I had her from about 8 weeks old.

Zoey is now 31 weeks old and will have an accident if I am not on her like white on rice. But there is hope and I intend to have her trained so she can have full run of the house. Just have to watch her because she loves her some area rugs. Now that the weather is warmer I am walking her way more and hopefully helping her get it all out. But I do have to say this little chick sure can poop.

It just comes down to persistence, and patience. Good luck to us all.

Lily is a yorkie mix and in the beginning I thought it was hopeless as well. Lily is pad trained and has not had an accident in my house in two months and she is 11 months old.

Don't give up. My Tinkerbell is 3 years old and completely potty trained. She has been since a little over 1 year old she was completely trustworthy.

ok good...i feel inspired. ill just keep doing what im doing and hope that with time will gain control. right now he is just to young for me to go to work and expect him to hold it that long. i dont think its physically possible. i mean 8 weeks old is really small. i have faith thank you all for giving me hope again! lol and good luck to us all!

8 weeks? I had no idea you had such a young one. I wouldn't expect him to hold anything longer than 30 minutes right now. Seriously he's just a baby baby. At about 16 weeks they start getting the idea, 6 months they should be doing pretty well and then it just gets better from there.

Milo pees in his crate all the time! We started making his crate a little smaller last night to see if he would stop peeing in one corner and sleeping in the other. But when we woke up, we found that he lifted his leg and pee'd on the other side and left his own side nice and dry. Sneaky little thing but were still working on it.

Snickers is almose 1 year old and I have never had a problem with potty training him. We got him when he was 8 weeks and he used the pad at first. Then moved the pad outside (my vet suggested him go outside) and since then he has been going out side. I think since we had had him he has maybe had 5 accidents. He is not kept in a crate and has had full run of the house since he was about 5 months old with no problem. I am a stay at home mom so he spends a lot of time with me and I have a mature boxer (if there is such a thing) so he just follows my boxer around outside and pees where my boxer does. I think I just got lucky with Snickers. He is also a larger yorkie (10.5 lbs) so I think he can hold it longer. When I was first training him I kept a leash on him and kept him tied to me so when he had to potty I would have him follow me to that spot and tell him to potty and then give him a treat. This worked great for me and I would say that by 3 months he was 85% trained.

Gracie is a little over 4 months now and she has been potty trained for awhile now! shes a good girl! I dont like to leave Gracie shes my baby!!! and for her being a service animal she dosent have to be left at home... :D which makes us both happy! I still havent taken her to the grocery store or resturants just because I dont want to chance them telling me no... so she gets a baby sitter! lol I know Im a dork! lol I just dont want to leave her alone! or in her crate!

Hi there. I am NO puppy trainer as I just got my Yorkie a little over a week ago. She is now 9 weeks old. We are crate training and that has been going really well. We have had no crate accidents and she sleeps through the night so no problem there. This is what I do during the day.....

In the morning I let her out and take her straight outside. I ALWAYS bring a treat along so I can give it to her if she goes. After she is done her "poops and pees" then she is allowed to run and play in the house but I do keep a CLOSE eye on her at ALL times. When she is tired she goes back in the crate. She has no trouble holding it in the crate for 2 to 2 and a half hours so that is when I run and do work/errands. Then I repeat the same thing all day long.

The accidents we have had in the house were due to her being under the kids watch. (My kids are older and great with her but haven't picked up on potty signs yet...I am still learning too) If I see her in the middle of going then I scoop her up and take her straight out. I say "no" ONLY if I catch her in the act. If it has happened and I missed it till later then I clean it up and don't punish....she can't rememeber what she did after the fact.

But, I know I am a LONG way from her being trained....

I am planning to use the bell training method. I got the bell just need to tie it up.

Bella is just over a year and she has been completely potty trained since 5 months (the little ones do seem to take longe than the big ones). She hasn't had any accidents. Even when we're gone at work/school for 7 hours and she's in her x-pen she doesn't "go". Some friends of ours watched her for 3-days when we were out of town in October (she was 7 months) and she never had an accident at their house. I fully believe with consistency and repetition most any dog can be potty trained (though I'm sure there are exceptions but I think it's rare). My friends who watched her for us have 2 Shi Tzu's that are about 2 & 3 years old and they still occasionally have accidents but it's because they've never been properly potty trained and shown what's expected of them (even my friend will admit this is true). Don't stress out, keep doing what you've been doing, stay consistent and I'm sure you won't have any problems. Good luck!:)

I am having the same problem as the above poster. Angel is 6 mos old and goes in her crate all the time or the house. I have sectioned the crate off so it is smaller and sometimes she will hold it and sometimes she won't. I don't know what else to do. I have been really trying to listen/watch out for signs that she has to go. Sometimes I will walk outside and she will go and 15-20 mins later she will also go in the house! Another thing she does is do little "marking" pees (I guess?) around various parts of the house, I have no idea why because I have no other pets. I have been getting up at 4 and 5 am to take her out in the morning since I guess she can't hold it but sometimes she has already gone. I have gotten up all through the night if she even barks a lot and acts like she has to go. During the day she is usually crated and sometimes she holds it and sometimes she doesn't. I am at my witts ends, I just don't know what to do anymore.

Our guy is almost 1 year old and held it in his cage for 11 hrs the other day. But as soon as we got home and took him out he made it outside just off the porch before he let it go. Didnt even bother with finding a place to cock his leg.

Can they be house trained? Yes, Is it hard? It wasnt with Aiden, Does it take a long time? Took us about 3 months. Can they be 100% house trained? I dont know yet. We still put him in his cage when we are gone for a long time.

What I have learned with dogs is not to expect too much until they are about 6-7 months old. That is my opinion anyways. You get out what you put into it. I look back and cant really remember when we were potty training him. So it must not have been to bad. Now our only problem is getting him to sleep at night he likes to roam the house.
