When will this puppy settle down? My Bernie is 14 weeks old, and so full of energy. First, he's over-socialized! I take him to work with me every day. I don't want to leave him at home while he is a puppy. He stays at home alone occasionally, but not for long periods of time yet. He thinks that he has to run up to everybody. He's like, Look at me, look at me, I'm so cute you are just going to have to pet me, look, let me roll over for you, watch me I'll lay on my back so you can rub my tummy. I'll sit for you, lay for you, what do you want. I could go on and on. He runs around in the yard like crazy playing with my grandchildren. He's so cute I want to cuddle him and baby him, and he's too big for that now! He's Mr. Independent, unless he wants your attention. I can handle the over socialization, it's the energy he has. Can I look forward to him settling down a bit when he gets a little older? What about when he's neutered at about 5 or 6 months, will that settle him down any? If not, it's ok, cause he's so darn adorable. |
I saw a change about 10 months...but now at 16 months even better. Before a year I could not have a house guest she didnt attack with kisses. Now she says hello then gets bored fast and lays down |

My little guy will lick you to death too. He gets so excited to meet new people. He shakes and shakes til you pat attention to him. :) |
they all have such a mind of their own... mine is the complete opposite, she is scared to death of everyone.... she did calm down tho, alot after she made 1 year, she is so content now to just lay with me, she even FUSSES at me when I am busy and cannot sit on the "bankie" with her(my bed"). They are so cute it is hard not to just go with the flow... hehe Good Luck with your baby! d |

When Coby was neutered, I noticed a miniscule change. .... well, I don't think he changed at all - it was just wishful thinking. HOWEVER, 2 days before he was one year old, Coby was actually napping through the day and laying on my lap while I watched tv. I thought he wasn't feeling well. But actually - he was turning one year old!! He has turned into the biggest cuddle bug since. He still has loads of energy and will play fetch for 12 hours straight if you're up for it. But he has definitely calmed down and is just what I'd hoped for! |
he's still just a baby! i think it's wonderfulthat he's so friendly and confident at that young age. i would not even consider having him neutered befor a year old. they need hormones to develop muscles. i have this on the advise of an orthopedic vet that fixed my BB' s LP at 4 years while we were in agility training. enjoy his puppy antics while you can, theygrow up sooo fast. |
I am reading this and praying that my 6 mos old (today!) settles down at some point. When we got him at 2 mos. i would sit on the couch with him for hours and just cuddle and watch tv, now i can't get him to stop for 2 seconds never mind sitting on the couch, every night i try to sit with him and it doesn't work i end up having to put him in the kitchen where he barks and runs around. They tire you just looking at them go. Good luck to you and me too, glad to here it will come to an end. :animal36 |

Oh, this thread is giving me hope! We have 4 that are 6 months old so we get a lot of full mouth kisses and tongues up the nose! We also get tripped, slammed into, jumped on and basically battered! LOL! We love it but we also appreciate quiet time when they all collapse from play and take a nap. :) |
Mine is 4 1/2 months and has started the "I'm running away from you when you call me, I need to chew on your fingers and oh yeah the pee pads..that's right I forgot" phase. Oh the joy of it! He still makes me laugh constantly and we are just muddling through it. So nice to know others are in the same boat. Before we know it they will be all grown up and we will be saying..oh remember when they were puppies. (By then we'll forget all this and be thinking...hmmmm..maybe it's time for another  ) |
My youngest is a few days over 7 months and is still as playful as ever, but I have noticed she is calmer and rests more. Her two sisters appreciate the rest periods for sure. :D Maybe after your boy is around 7 or 8 months and has been neutered, he will settle some too. ;) |
I think that some of it is just their individual personalities. Brooke has always been fairly calm, though she can get excited when she sees food or goes to the dog park! On the other hand I have Booboo, who is 6 years old and still runs around like a crazy maniac!! He acts like a puppy still! If you come over he will run up to you and then go get a toy so you can play with him! Hopefully they will settle down but ,if not, just enjoy their lively personalities and antics!! |
I was told to just enjoy their "puppiness" as it goes by all to quickly :p I love when Lucy goes nuts! |

Spike is just about 18 months now, and I'm noticing a slight change in him, especially when I'm home all day. Tomorrow, for example, he's going to the groomers in the morning, then I'll pick him up and take him for a walk. That means he'll be on the go from 8 a.m. until about 3 p.m., so I KNOW he'll be tired in the evening. This didn't happen when he was a pup, and I've only begun to notice the difference. Although it means he's getting older, I'm grateful for the change, because when he was a pup he was such a ball of energy, and such an attention seeker! On days when I'm at work, he doesn't usually slow down much in the evening, although it does help if I take him for a run in the park as soon as I get home! |

he loves everyone and every aniamal he sees!! he's about 7 months so manybe I am getting close to the calming down days!;) |
My Pokey is a crazy lil rascal too! She will be 6 months next week. I actually have decided once my move into my new home is completely unpacked that I am buying a playmate for her. I think two will be good. I figure I will buy within the month. I work from home and right now Pokey only naps in my lap or cuddles when Im at my desk for about 10 minutes....if Im lucky! I am real busy working for the next two months and only break about ten minutes an hour to play with her and run her outside. Im feeling a bit guilty as I would love to play all day long!! So I figure with a second, they can entertain themselves when Im really into my work......plus, Im getting the addiction bug! Heck, by this time next year I probably have like six Yorkies!! ;) |
Home Entertainment My boy is 15 1/2 months and my my girl is 10 months. I found MacTavish calmed slightly after neutering and definitely at one year. Madeline is just starting to calm. However, they still want to kiss everyone, run like the wind inside the house and out, wressle, chase each other, just about everthing described above. We call it our "Home Entertainment" and wouldn't change them for anything. Linda |
