Help! He's going crazy! I posted this on the grooming board, but thought someone here might have some suggestions as well. Our little guy Windsor is 14 weeks old. I just tried to brush him and before I could run the brush through his coat he went CRAZY...biting, barking, and snapping. There was no matting on his back where I was going to brush, I really just wanted to introduce him to the brush. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to better handle this? Thanks! |
Pepper didn't like to be brushed at first either but we just kept at it. granted she didn't have near the reaction yours did. Pepper growls at me when I go to dry her off with a towel after her bath, just have to strongly tell her "no growl" or "no bite". you could let winston smell the brush and play with it for a while, or try to brush him out when he is drowsy, thats when I cut pepper's nails |
Welcome to YT!! it sounds as if he's not been groomed growing up,, poor baby,, you'll just have to keep at it,, let him smell the brush, comb,, do a little at a time,, give high praise and treats for good behavior! Good Luck! |
I give Bernie a toothbruth, or another brush to chew on while I'm brushing him. Bernie is 14 weeks old too and he does all that growling like he's going to do something. I just have to distract him with something else. Bernie gets a bath quite freqently so he's getting used to it. He doesn't like it, but he submits to it! How much does your 14 week old weigh? Bernie is 4.7 pounds and like the "big kid" in the class. |
Otis is like that, I have to be very very gentle with the brush or he runs away. He still doesn't like it, but he tolerates it if I brush him very lightly. Good luck. |
I use treats, lots and lots of tiny little treats. We're getting better. At least when I get the brush or comb out, Coby's interested and comes running. We do a little bit, and if he's still, he gets a treat. It's a good time to practice sit and stay commands too. Coby doesn't have a great attention span with it, but that's more my fault than his. I should do it every day instead of when I get around to it or he really really needs it! |
