Help with potty training Ugh I just typed a long thing and then I hit something to highlight it by accident and erased it, I hate that. Anyway, Oliver is almost four months old now and I've had him since he was exactly eight weeks. I think he's making average progress with potty training given his size and age, but my grandmother (with whom I live) is putting pressure on me to have him trained by the time he reaches six months. I have a lot of faith in my boy, but I'd still like some tips. Namely on how to get him to recognize that he goes outside ONLY, rather than outside when he's already out there and inside when he is already in. Occasionally he'll bark in his pen to be let out at night, but not usually, and never when he's just roaming the house. I punish him by putting him in his crate if he messes on the floor, but he's not in there for more than five minutes. I also do not/will not hit him or rub his nose in his mess, though I do show him and give him a firm "no." When he goes outside, he is met with verbal praise. I've tried giving him treats but he's usually not interested. I've tried several brands of dog treats. I bring him out probably every hour or hour and a half during the day when I'm home, I bring him out every morning at around five am, and I bring him out as the last thing I do before bed every night, usually around midnight. Still, usually when I wake up in the morning he's peed in his pen. I don't put him in his crate to sleep because when I first brought him home and tried it he cried so hard he vomited on two separate occasions, and he's much happier and far more well behaved in his pen. My main concern is really how to get him to let us know when he has to be let out. He doesn't give us any signs at all. He'll be perfectly normal one minute and then the next he's peeing right in front of us. What do we do? |
potty training Hello:aimeeyork I have just seen your add, and I have 5 Yorkies, dad Willie, now 6. mum Pandora,now5. Alice (!st born) 3. Spirit (2nd born, one of a twin, did not make it) also 3. Sam, he was last. also 3. they have a brother and a sister daisybelle and charlieboy, who went to friends of ours, and we do still keep in touch# and the pups still no each other, the weirdest thing is thought my childhood I was told that mothers never recognise their young, but no only does pandora no she is the mum she still also tells them off. Anyway, as I was taalking about house training, I have kept dogs for years and have never ever had any trouble taining them just the way that you are, and for me it works and works well. well it took a long time to get them to be clean, i think its because i had three to chase after, as i say i have never had any trouble, mum and dad i found to take longer than other dogs but got there in the end, so i would say keep up the good work, and be patient, it takes as long as it takes, summer is on its way and that always makes it better, try and make sure you go out every time with it as then you are sure they have been , instead of being out there for ages forgetting what they went out there for, come back in and wee. they get me up in the night for a wee or a poo and i think aint they good, it seem as i get back into bed with the first one, another one wants to go, why cant they all go together, i do threaten them that i will take all down togethter but when i see them sleeping so soundly i cant disturb them, still never mind, they more than make up for their little problems please let me know how you are getting on i would really be interested take care:animal36 :animal-pa |
First off, I'd have a talk with your grandmother. A 4 month old puppy is far too young to expect to be potty trained. There is no way he'll be completely trained by 6 months. I mean, maybe, but it's rare. There are Yorkies who are 3 years old and still are not completely trained. I'm not trying to discourage you, but your puppy is VERY young and will be for a while. Yorkies are a tough breed to train and that's what you signed up for when you got a Yorkie, let alone a puppy. If your grandmother is starting to get annoyed/angry with your First -- CLEAN! :) I would invest in a black light and go around and find EVERY SINGLE pee spot. Next, buy an enzyme cleaner. Regular carpet cleaners do not clean carpet effectively. Only an enzyme cleaner will completely get the smell out - even if you can't smell it, they can, and if they can smell it, they will continue to go there. I'd suggest Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. There are other brands, and they can all be found at Petsmart. Just make sure it says it's an enzyme cleaner on the bottle. Once you've cleaned your carpet and it is urine-free, I'd suggest buying a couple of belly bands. They are rectangles of fabric that fit around your dog's belly, covering the penis. You just put a pad or something absorbent in it and it essentially acts like a diaper. This cannot be your only solution, but will probably save a little bit of your sanity. ;) Make sure you change the pad after he's peed in it or every couple of hours and wipe down the belly area. Now as far as training goes.. we trained Franklin using a potty pad... is that a possibility? That way if he has to go during the night, he can pee on a potty pad and then go outside when you're there to take him out? Crating him after he has a mistake really is doing you no good. Once they do something, they usually forget right after so he isn't associating peeing in the house with being put in his crate. He just thinks you're mean. When you take him outside, does he go? Keep praising him like you are.. and try to find treats that will really make his mouth water. The more positive reinforcement, the better. There are a lot of healthy human foods that will work as treats - see if he's interested in apples, or cheese, or little pieces of boiled chicken. Is he on a leash while he's out to potty? Sometimes puppies get so excited they're outside that they forget they have to potty. Keeping him on a leash (with a harness) will help keep him focused. Also, how long are you staying outside with him? Stay until he goes, unless of course it's over.. 30 minutes or so. But stay at least 15 minutes. Once you bring him inside, WATCH HIM LIKE A HAWK. The minute you see a sniff and circle, pick him up and take him outside. Confine him to one room so that you can keep a better eye on him. It will most likely be a while before he will start giving you signs. My friend's yorkie is a year and a half and still doesn't give her signs. Your best bet is to just prevent it from happening by taking him out often. I'd say every hour until he's older. Eventually, he'll learn but don't be surprised if it takes a while to click. If you're ambitious though, you can give bell training a try. Just do a search for bell training and you'll find a lot of good advice. Hope this helps.. feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Good luck! |
I forgot to mention you should limit his food/water intake before bed and MAKE SURE he goes potty and he'll less likely to pee at night. |
