Spoiled YT, temper tantrums, potty woes
 

Hi, I'm so glad to have found this forum. Well, I have been a very bad Yorkie mommy. :( We have had our Yorkie since he was 12 weeks old. He's now about 8 months. The first night we tried the play pen, he whined and cried until we finally gave in and put him in bed with us. He's slept in bed with us ever since. He's actually pretty good about bedtime. He gets tired like we do and usually falls right to sleep.

Mousey's a sweetheart... but the problem is he thinks he's human and I can't get him to listen at all. I've been training him on pee pads, however he gets confused and he'll go on rugs, blankets, or anything on the floor now.:scratchhe I've never been able to get him to go poo poo on his pads. We have all hardwood, but we'd like to carpet our house, but we can't do that until we have him trained all the way. I've read alot about crate training on here, but we both work during the day so I keep him in the kitchen/sunroom area instead of keeping him confined in a small crate while i'm at work. Is our only option crate training him to learn to potty on his pads? :confused:

I've tried working with him on the floor to teach him sit, however he runs away from me all the time and I can't get him to concentrate or stay close to me for very long.

Also, something new... he's starting to throw temper tantrums. When we tell him no he barks and whines at us... and he scoots back as he's doing this. Also, he never listens and just barks or he looks at us for a second and then he continues to do whatever it is he's doing. I don't know if he just doesn't understand what no means or he just doesn't think he needs to listen

Any tips or pointers on any of these issues would be very helpful. This is our first puppy. We've treated him like a child since we don't have children, but he needs to be trained because I don't want him to be completely uncontrollable.

On a funny note... When I put t-shirts or clothes on him it calms him down and where ever he is... he'll just collapse and lay down.:dogzzz: Does anyone elses YT do this?

first off.. WELCOME :)

second... you have alpha issues (not to worry.. we did too) He thinks he is in charge... and he needs to realize.. that is not the case. A major issue with this is that he is in your bed... he thinks he is your equal. another thing is food... he MUST MUST sit and stay before the food is put down. He must sit for ALL treats and before he goes out the door... and YOU go out the door first.... he should only be allowed on the couch ONCE you invite him up and When we eat, Layla is in her crate in a different room. This is SO hard.. esp since it sounds like your pup is spoiled like Layla was spoiled.. but it leads to horrible issues (Layla had aggression towards other dogs because she felt she needed to profect us... ) it is a long road.. but it is do-able if you want a well behaved pup... and don't we all :) You should also try a VERY long walk at the begining of the day... a tired pup is usually a well behaved pup and you should also go to puppy classes.. they were THE BEST thing for us... the teachers are so great at telling you how to gain control over your dogs... i think it would really help

In order for your pup to go on wee wee pads, put him on wee wee pad and tell him to go wee wee or poo poo:D when he would go on wee wee pad you say good boy and clap and make a big fuss about it and right away praise him with treats. Once he knows he ll get a treat everytime he goes on wee wee pad he would only go there;) It takes time but he will get it.
When it comes to teaching him tricks I know what you mean Maxi used to run around. Actually sit is very easy you just say sit and gently push his bottom down and say good boy and praise him.
Sounds like your baby is an alpha and YT member above me mentioned good points in this thread about this issue. You can also teach him that you are an alpha by gently putting him on his back and gently hold him until he stops fussing around. This techinique I saw on Dog Whisperer and it really works. Its pretty much how alpha dogs tell other dogs that they are the leaders.
If your baby barks a lot teach him no bark (be quiet command). When he barks say be quiet and when he stops barking praise him.
Hehe Maxi used to do calm down when we would put new clothes on him. he would lay down or wouldnt want to go for walks but as the day went by he got over it. He would act the same way about any new clothes:rolleyes:

Welcome! Our Baby Ozzy is also like our child since we don't have any. He's pretty spoiled with attention but we are firm with him in regards to behavior as he is a BETA personality. (Not top dog but a social climber :) )

We don't play tug of war..well I don't...Hubby doea but he makes sure he always wins and he never never sleeps in our bed or is allowed to lay on our shoulders. We do make him wait to go out and come in the house.

I started sending Ozzy to Daycare 3 times a week when he was 12 weeks old. I know alot of people don't agree with that but it was the best thing I have done for him. He is tired when he gets home and the daycare folks helped us housebreak him so now if you take him out he goes potty and if he's inside he goes on his pad. He has great dog and people skills.

It's really hard being firm with these little ones but in the end it's worth it having a happy balanced dog. Good luck!
