Overwhelmed with new puppy :( So we came home with our new 12-week Yorkie two days ago. He is so adorable! He was such a good boy until later yesterday and today. I feel like I'm doing things wrong, but don't know what to do because this is my first puppy. It's probably all typical puppy behavior. He is biting me a lot (and just started this late yesterday) and not responding to a loud "no", yelping and ignoring, or even a water bottle. He'll stop for maybe one second. He also tries to jump on furniture that he will never reach and I'm terrified he'll hurt himself jumping and kind of falling as he misses his target. He whines, too, as he tries to jump. He's been pretty good in the crate at night, but when I put him in it any other times he barks, whines, and whimpers on and on. I just put him in for brief trips out and I tried while at home for practice. I try to put treats in the crate and make it cozy and fun for him. If I say "quiet" he stops to hear me talk, then continues barking. I thought I'd be able to bring him with me for some errands, but he's hyper on my lap in the car and was freaking out in the carrier (I tried putting in treats, putting it on the floor...he peed in it). The only way I can even sit down and use my computer now is because he's napping. Ugh, I've read books and gotten tips from friends, but this is just the tip of the iceberg--I must have done something to let him think he is "alpha". help? |

Take a deep breath and relax. This is all normal puppy behavior. Take him on some good, long walks as soon as he's utd on his shots. That will tire him out and get rid of some of that excess energy. On the biting I always yelp as if it hurts a lot and then very gently close my hand around his mouth and say no bite in a firm voice. It's going to take him a little more time to be comfortable in his surroundings and in his crate. It sounds like you're doing everything right so just keep it up. As for the peeing in his crate, make it a much smaller area by stuffing towels in the back so he can stand up, turn around, and lay down with no extra room. He won't want to potty where he sleeps so that should help. As for the barking, when you find the answer, let me know  we haven't been able to conquer Tucker's incessant barking. At least Lexie is a quiet girl :p If he gets too hyper pick him up and lay him like a baby in your arms. I have found that this calms Tucker and he'll chill out for a few minutes. If he's really getting rowdy and doing something you don't like flip him over on his back and gently grasp his neck and look him in the eye until he looks away from you. This shows him that you are the alpha dog. I hope some of this information works for you and if I've messed anything up feel free to correct me YTers. I'm still new at this. :D |
He'll get used to his crate.... Ramsey was awful in the car in that crate....she wasn't barking...she SCREAMED....LOUD. I'm pretty certain other drivers thought I was killing a dog in my car. She and Reese (who never screamed in his crate)....come to work with me everyday. It took a week for Ramsey to not scream....now when we are getting ready to go somewhere....she immeidiately gets inside hers...cause she wants to go. Don't let him wear you down...he's okay in there. |
Best advice....a tired puppy is a good puppy. Wear him out...walking or playing. |
Yes, from experience be sure he has puppy toys to chew on. I noticed baby toys worked for our dog also as long as they can't come apart into little bits. We went up to Petsmart and bought some puppy toys (soft chew/teething toys) for Beckham when we first got him at 10 weeks. They just need something to chew on, if they don't get it from a toy they will find anything to chew on, even a $250 pair of glasses or a $150 pair of BCBG's that I bought my girlfriend one time. Buy plenty of toys and like said above take him for good walks. The jumping won't stop until he gets up. Beckham used to try so hard sometime running into the couch, it was pretty cute. Just be sure he's not doing it on tile floor and he should be okay. About whimpering in the cage. Identify a word like we use "night night" and each time you say that word put a treat in his cage. He'll soon get the idea that night night means going to the kennel and associate it with a good reward. Soon enough you'll say it and he'll be in there happy as long as its safe, cozey, and secure. Your doing good and he will calm down some but these dogs are terriers and they will be hyper at times. Now Beckham enjoys playing fetch, drops on command, leaves it on command, sits, lays down, notifies me when he wants to go outside, and can find where our other Yorkie is or my girlfriend is by asking "where is (insert name)?". Keep with training here and there. Pretty soon you'l want another one to keep your Yorkie company. :-D |
I would try pennies in a can. I use a metal can that losenges (sp?) come in. That way I can carry it in my pocket. When he bites shake the can. He will stop immediately to see what it is. AS SOON AS HE STOPS priase him like crazy and give him a toy that he CAN bite. Be consistant. Don't yell.. Just firmly say, no bite. |
Thanks for those tips. I really want to take him out for a walk, but he still needs another vaccination, so I'm afraid to do it yet. Also, (typical, I know), he chews on the leash and doesn't really know how to go for a walk--I tried this morning on our back patio. I have been trying to flip him on his back and he keeps trying to bite, turning his head side to side biting and seeming to get more and more agitated. One time he even started biting his own paws, which concerned me and I put him back down. :( |

He may never care for it in your arms. Ramsey is stiff as a board if I try to hold her in my arms on her back. However, correcting her using this....with her back against the floor....worked. Hold him until he stops resisting you. |

you can spray bitter apple on his leash as well so he won't want to bite it. It takes them a while to get the hint of what a walk is :p another great idea (when is up to date on his shots) is puppy class. teaches him basic training, that you are in control, great socializing and makes them SO tired :p |
We got LookOut car seats for our 2. The adjustable strap hooks up to the harness. They love it - they're elevated enough to see out the window, but secure so that they don't get thrown around. Here's a link to them. http://apparelandaccessories.petedge...Pets-ZX545.pro For the chewing... besides say NO try to have something that he can chew on nearby, then you can give that to him instead of your hand. :p |
My tip for barking: I've had my yorkie puppy for a month. The first few days he kept on whining and barking--even growling--whenever I put him in his crate. A trick that worked for me was to use a towel to cover his crate whenever he barked. So when i put him in his crate, I would say, "go to your room" cheerily, leave a small treat and say 'good boy' once he was in. If he started whining I would ignore him. The moment he barked, I would immediately say a firm "NO" and quickly cover the crate with a towel. He didn't like that he couldn't see me so he learned quickly to never bark - and hasn't in the last three weeks! :) |
I just wanted to welcome you to YT. You are getting a lot of good advice. I don't have anything to add except that we've all been there. You also might put the bitter apple on your hands. Just don't put your fingers in your mouth!;) Play, play, play, play....best advice! :D |
