Help - Strange potty habit My four month yorkie has some strange potty habit. I am crate training him so he is in there at night and for a few hours in the morning when I have to be out. I work from home so I let him play in the room where I work in since he is always in my view. I know he can hold it for up to 3-4 hours since he does so when he is in his crate, but the hour that he is out to play he goes every 20 minutes, in small size amounts. He doesn't have a urinary tract infection, and has been doing this for the whole month I've had him. I don't understand why he won't let it all go at once. Is this something he will grow out of? Or should I put him back in the crate right after he goes and let him play less often? What is the maximum number of hours he should be in his crate? Right now it is only about 10 hours total (including the night). |
I think that it is normal, IMO, that when a puppy is awake and playing for it to go piddle every 15 to 20 minutes. I even set a timer so I wouldn't forget. I usually paid for it if I ignored the 20 minute time schedule. I have a 9.5 mo. and I still have to make sure that he goes out more frequently than my older boy and girls, although it is not every 20 minutes, thank goodness. How about putting an ex-pen close to you with a piddle pad, either disposable or cloth? That way he has room to play close to you but yet not free to piddle anywhere he pleases. Just a suggestion. |
Are you sure he is not marking his territory? When yorkies mark they piddle small amounts of urine............ |
Thanks for your reply! I forgot to clarify - it's usually on his potty pad, but lately i've noticed that he goes without warning sometimes (occasionally on the carpet). He sniffs for half a second and just goes! Maybe he's become very comfortable with the room we are in. The play pen might work, but the room is fairly small - maybe 10 ft by 10 ft. But my main worry was not so much where he was going - he's been fairly good about that. But i just thought it was strange he was going so often in one hour when he was already holding it for 3. |
yes i agree and he will do until he get fixed or you can use belly band that the yorkie resure recomends |
Yes these are signs that he is marking his territory. This could be fixed, like mentioned above, by getting him fixed. |
Again, thanks for all of your input. He is only four months old, is not lifting his leg, and is going mostly on the pee pad - so I don't think he is marking. I am thinking of getting him a belly band so that he learns to hold it more when he is out of his crate too. |
I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem!! lol :animal36 |
