walking your puppy
 
Hi! I have a 9 week old puppy that is just full of energy! Anyway, I know at a minimum I need to wait until he receives all of his shots/vaccinations until I can start wallking him. But, I just wanted to get some feedback on when everyone began walking their yorkies? I would like to introduce walking to him sooner rather than later so that he can burn off some energy, get used to walking/leash, and get some good exercise outside.

any suggestions?

Welcome to YT...I took Odie out about 10 weeks old... I watched him like a hawk made sure that he didn't get into anything he shouldn't. He did very well. I had bought him a tiny harness and took him walking he is really good at going for walks and he can't wait to get out there now. He gets bummed when I don't take him walking now..lol He is now 14 weeks old. He would love to walk far but due to my medical issues..( I have to have back surgery which limits my walking right now ) but once I am on my feet and able to walk his little feet will be pattering right beside me :D
His little legs go a mile a minute when we walk too.
He is a ball of energy...lol

We have a porch, stairs and a sidewalk out front of our house. I have occasionally taken my younger dogs for a walk around the porch on a leash, down the stairs, and in front of our house. I know that isn't the best thing to do before all the shots, but I also understand the need to burn off a little energy. I don't know of any really good answer to this....maybe someone else here has a suggestion.

I think you can take your puppy anywhere that is clean.... I think the old rule is for dog parks, parks, where unknown dogs use the facilities. I see no reason to keep them confined to the house, but stay away from big dogs and doggie areas.

I took Rusty out as a pup before his shots were over, never had a problem.

I took mine starting at 6 weeks old when I got him. He always stays on the sidewalk and I have had no problems.

Ok - thanks for the information! He is just a bundle of energy and I think walking soone would be helpful to burn off some of his energy!

I agree, the rule is for most likely where other dogs frequent, but you have NO IDEA where other dogs have been outside. Not only that, but parvo can be found almost anywhere. Before Franklin had parvo, I would have told you it'd be fine to walk your dogs anywhere "clean" but now, I really suggest you wait until his shots are done. It's really better safe than sorry, and you don't have that much longer to wait. Until then, good ways to burn off energy are playing fetch in the house, or chasing them around... they have a lot of energy but they sure to figure out how to get it out inside. We didn't start walking Franklin until like 5 months because he was so sick and he did fine. :)
