new yorkie puppy question? hello, i have just gotten a new seven week old yorkie puppy. my husband and i both work full time (8 to 5) and we are crate training our puppy so that he learns to use the restroom outside and is safe in the house when we aren't able to supervise him. i've read that a yorkie puppy can only hold his bladder for so long (as many hours as his months in age), but i am only able to come home for lunch to let him outside to use the restroom. he seems to be doing okay adjusting to the crate (we have only had him for three days) (does not pee in his crate and is starting to use the restroom outside) but is he too young to be crate trained/in a crate for this long (e.g., 4 hours)? |
Welcome to yt. I really can't help with your question 'cause I never crated Murfee. I hope you can come to our DFW meet up on March 29th. Would love to meet you. |
Seven weeks is very young for a yorkie pup to leave it's mother. I would think it would not be good for it to try to hold it's bladder as long as you discribe. Also, yorkie pups need to eat very often. At that age I would say to offer food every hour or two. These little dogs can get very very sick if they are not eating often. I'm not sure about your baby but my two would never touch their food while in a create. I have an x pen for my puppy and she will eat when she is in there. I leave food out for my two at all times. Is there any way the breeder could hold your baby until the puppy gets to be 10 -12 weeks? That is the standard for a yorkie puppy to go home. if not, I would try an x pen, ( I have a plastic play yard from toys r us) with a open create for my puppy to sleep in, food and water, a few safe toys, and you can put a potty pad in there so your puppy can go when it needs to. Thei is the best site for you to be in for info on puupy care. best of luck with your baby, I'm sure it's adorable! Please post some pics so we get to see!!! We all love pics of the little babies!!!!;) |
I have a 12 week puppy that I got at 7 weeks. We got our puppies at a very young age and that does make it difficult. My Roxi goes to work with me daily but at night I have chosen to keep her in a small bathroom and let her roam in and out of her crate to use a pee pee pad. Some people do not like the pads but for smaller dogs when they are young I think it's the way to go. I do plan on training to outside also when the weather clears up. She is use to the crate now and does'nt mind being confined in it if need be. Hope this helps it has worked well with her. |
As said before, 7 weeks is very young. I would worry that 4 hours might be hard for him for a few more weeks. However, we got Coby at 10 weeks and I spent a few days at home with him. We did crate while we went back to work. I work 5 mins from home, so I was able to make sure that I came home at least once a day. Coby did well with 4 hours before too long. Good luck!! |

once they get use to being in the crate they won't have a problem with it... |
Hi, I got my puppy at 8 weeks, that's normal here in UK, but I can't see that 7 weeks can be much different. It comes down to this, My pup did not go to the loo nearly as much as everyone said he would, he can (and did) go several hours quite happily. You cannot harm your puppy by trying to make him hold on for too long, if it gets too much he will just pee in his bed, if he has not done that so far then you have no reason to think there will be a problem. He seems to be doing very well, keep it up and good luck, Lisa and Rufus |
my little one i got at 7 1/2 wks and he is doing fine with a crate and about 4 hrs.. hasnt messed in crate once yet. cross my fingers. He is completely adorable.. I just wish he would stop eating grass and finding cat poop. |
great - thanks for all your help! i may try the x-pen/pee pad option until he gets a little older. that way i know he is able to eat/drink enough and not have to hold his bladder to long when i am gone. |
