crates? excercise pens? so confused.... I recently just posted a thread about potty training and haven't got to many responses (granted its been about 12 hours :D) But I have some more detailed questions...I have Watson pee pad trained but I want to get away from that and have him go outside. I work from 9-5 and don't know what to do with him while I'm gone. Right now he has "all access" to my apartment. If I continue this, I feel nothing is changing he'll just go over to the pad that I do have down and continue to use it. So do I keep him in a small confined area during the day, like an xpen? And keep a pad in there? I feel like that won't teach him anything b/c as soon as he has to go, he'll go over to the pad and use it. And then keep him in his crate at night? Also, in the evening when I am home watching him...do I keep a pad down in the "usual spot" or should I take that away to show him that isn't available anymore....ONLY OUTSIDE ;)!! Thanks for any help... |

Wrigley is litter box trained, but she will go outside as well. I'm sure there more people on here that have their dogs go in and outside and could probably give you better info. I would think though since you are gone 9-5, you would have to leave pads down. I don't know if a Yorkie could hold it that long! I know Wrigley can't. I would think if you left pads down while you are gone, but take him out when you get home and keep that routine, he will get the idea. I love crate training, Wrigley sleeps in a crate at night and we have a regular baby playpen for when we are gone for longer periods during the day. I would say an xpen would be a good idea during the day, I think they like smaller spaces. They tend to feel safer. Sorry that I can't be more help! |
I don't know how much this will help you but our Baby is in an xpen with pee pads down 2 days a week while we are at work. The other 3 days he is at puppy daycare. We are lucky that daycare has trained him to go outside so when I take him outside for a walk or play he goes potty. I have started to reduce the size of the pee pad area in his pen and when the weather breaks I will be really diligent about taking him out when I see him head towards his pad so hopefully he will get it that when we are home he goes out when he is alone use the pad. We do plan on always keeping a pee pad down somewhere in the house as the weather is so bad and the snow so deep he can't go potty outside most of the winter. We also crate at night. |
