another wee wee pad question what do ya think ? since i illiminated a few wee wee pads and lexi is still going where they used to be.. how about putting 1 wee wee pad in like a square bucket like a basin where you wash your feet? this way she will know that she has to jump into the basin do her business and jump back out. maybe after she does her business like poo, she wont eat it.. yeah right? what do ya think? like i said yesterday, i do have plastic on my whole living room rug and when its time for me to trust her i can take it off. in the mean time she i think will know that she has to find the basin to do her business in.... |
Why don't you crate her so you can cut down on covering your whole floor and you can train her to go in one spot? It seems you are making it hard on yourself by letting her run wild. Take her out thoughout the day, take her to the pee pad, let her run around a few minutes 100% supervised and put her back in the crate. |
. in the begining i had her in the crate and my mom used to let her out. i work all day long and mom is not available sometimes... i dont want to have her in a crate for 7 or 8 hrs..... its just not fair....she is used to the living room now... just wanted to know about in basin thing if its a good idea for me or not...... she was doing very well with 3 wee wee pads in there until i took 2 out... |
Well I don't think anything will work because her bathroom is always changing and she has full run of the house and is not trained. As long as she has full run like she does it probably won't matter what you do she will go where she pleases. Good luck. |
. does anyone else have any suggestions or comments about the basin with the wee pad in it for now ? |
I leave Maximus gated in the living room until I get home at which point he has full run of the house..except bathroom and bedroom which doors are closed. Maximus has a pad in the hallway which I was trying ot eliminate but he would go there anyways..after about a week of slowly moving it over he understood that he has to pee in the living room..but now he has started occasionally peeing right onthe edge so I bought a rubbermaid lid and put his pad in there so he has to phsically get in and the pee doesn't go outside..I still keep a pad in the bedroom for night time...but instead of 3 different spots there are only 2...but I think the basin idea is a good one |
. great, thank you so much for that answer... you have a great idea tooooo. the lid sounds just perfect......im going to try that today when i get home.. first ill try the basin cause i have one...if i have to get 2 then thats ok. at least she will know she has to jump in to go potty and no where else. |
. hi, you also do the same as i do with lexi, closing bedroom doors and only living room area until i get home. |
Help!!!!! Cowboy is 5 mo old now and has been using wee wee pads since very small. He stays in a safe room when i can't watch him and uses the pads. Three days ago he started chewing and shredding the pads. I am scared to use them because I am afraid that he will choke. Any suggestions would be appreciated! He also goes potty outside when I am at home. |
Yeah I never crated him (I know my fault)..but he caught on to potty training very quickly and he now does his poops right on the pad. He used to eat the poppies but try giving 2 pieces of pinapple (I use canned cubes) in her food and the poop won't taste so good to her, you can also try meat tenderizer (tsp.)on the food and it will deter her from eating the poo when it comes out the other end :) |

. wow clear deoderant. hmmmm sounds like another good idea you have. |
Thanks i will try the deoderant. I have been taping down his pad for about 2 mo. My cat (Cuddles) used to mess up the pad because she would try to cover up the poop after Cowboy used the pad, so I started taping it to the floor. Thanks again. |

Lexi Rae- We do the same thing... We close the bedroom door and give annie the full reign of the living room and kitchen. We put her wee wee pad in the bathroom... We had issues with the Pottie getting under the pad, so we bought a wizdog www.wizdog.com to put the the wee wee pad on top of. Same idea as the the rubbermaid as mentioned by luzangela428. I'd probably do the the rubbermaid only cause the wizdog is a good idea, but expensive, and of cheap construction... You can definately improvise and come up with something else for cheaper :) Just slowly move the pad to the area that you want her to go. And be consistent. The ONLY good thing we did with the house training was that we started with the pads in the bathroom! She is still not 100% on the pads but at least 98% in the bathroom :D |
. wiz dog good idea thanks....im going to try the basin first... i need a few of them . one for my aunts house,my moms house. and 2 for me...it would get costly.... i want to start tonight. how would i go about it... i have only one pee pee pad in the living room now.. should i just put the pad inside the basin? please let me know. .i appreciate your replies |
yes just put the pad in the basin. Start out with putting it in the area where she is already used to peeing. Odds are she is going to be confused and she won't use the basin at first. You will have to teach her. Start from the basics. Use whatever method, you did for getting her to use the pad alone. Be consistent, and keep doing. It will take a few days! And use treats! LOTS OF TREATS! That will speed along the process! As far as using the basin at your relatives houses. Use the same process there. It is a different environment, and again she won't understand. I bought a wizdog for Annie for my parents place but she just doesn't get it (or she is being stubborn  )even though it is the same thing. So when I am there we just take her out every couple hours and that works better... But if you want to use the basin there, then you will have to train her to use the basin there as well. Back to the basics :) |
. will do thanks,gina |
Potty pad trained too 1 Attachment(s) I've also been using potty pads. Alley is 10 months old. A week after I got him, there were hawks discovered in my neighborhood, so bye-bye outside! I did have a "room built for him" off of the screened in porch, he only wants to play there and not do his business there. He'll come flying back inside to use his pad instead. He too gets a little attitude and will tear up his pad too. He only does it when I'm at work so I know it's just to get some attention. I've added a pic of his playroom! |
. wow, thats some play room. i wish i had that. |
One other thing.. I don't know what size basin you are getting, but try to get one that is at least as close to the size of the wee wee pad. I can't remember if you said you work a regular workday like I do... But Annie is a bit of a snob... (and I've read other dogs being too) If the pad is full they won't use it and will instead pee on the floor next to it. Hence if you get a basin that is small that requires you to fold the the pad up, I think you can see what I am saying :) |
. yes i do work all day long.. to bad for me.. the basin i have home i think is alittle too small. i have to get a larger one... i also read that some of the yorkie talkers here use a lid....i guess like the cover of those big bins for storing clothing.. is that what it is ?or am i just nuts ? |
That would be my guess. (makes the most sense to me :D) |
Washable Pee Pee Pads Hi, Have you tried the washable pee pee pads? They are good for 300 washings. These are not shreadable and may work for you. They sell them at Petsmart for around $22.00 each or at JB Wholesale (dog catalog) for around 11.00 each. Worth a try. :aimeeyork |
We use the wizdog as well. so it should work... |
The bin will work. There is a member here that puts a pee pad inside a bin and her pups goes there. You need to show your pup where the pad is. Just be consistent and patients. The wizdog is good but is too expensibe. I like the idea of the plastic lid. I might try that one myself. |
. the washables sound good... it doesnt have the scent that need to potty. my puppy still needs that, i think, im so confused about this |
I use a shower curtain liner It was suggested to me to line the floor under Alley's pen (when he was younger) with a clear shower curtain liner. After the pen days, I cut the liner in 4 pieces and keep one under each of his potty pads now. He has 2 potty pads, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. That leaves me 2 extras for when I wash the others. It does help when he goes to tinkle and raises his leg towards the edge of the pad! |
Thank you so much!!!!!!! The deoderant worked great. I had to leave him for about 4 hrs the other day. When I got home he had gone potty on his pad. It was still taped down and he had not shredded it. I have learned so much on this site. I really appreciate all of you sharing your experiences. It is so nice to be able to get info from someone that has experience instead of just books. Thanks again. |
