Potty Training What is the best way to start potty training our new 9 week old puppy? We are taking her outside when she walks up in the morning to use the bathroom and several times a day. Even if she uses the bathroom outside, she comes right in and does it again. Any ideas on how to get her to tell me to go outside or how to get her to use the bathroom in the same spot in the house each time? Thanks: |
First, little puppies rarely empty the first time they go. Extend the time outside, walking puppy in circles and see if she will go a second time. I would either train outside or inside, but not both at this age, you might confuse her. Try hanging some potty bells at the door. Ring them each time you take her out to potty. You can put a dab of peanut butter on the bottom bell to entise her to ring them herself. She can hold her bladder for about 1 hour for every month she is old up until 6 months or so. |
Potty Training Thank you so much for the info. I had heard about the bells but wasn't sure if she would pay attention to them at this age. Thanks again! |
Bells As for the bells, my Petsmart Trainer said that it is a very helpful tool when it comes to potty training! He said to just ring it everytime you're taking her outside to potty (not to play/walk/etc). Eventually, I think your puppy will get the hang of it. I think it's even better if you start it when she's that young! I have to still potty train mine... but just sharing a tip from last week! |
