Ok we've got 'sit' down - how to teach lay down? Hi all! I did some quick searches and did not turn up anything easily, so hopefully it is ok that i'm posting something that I'm sure has been asked a million times ;) Violet is almost 10 months old now... and I'm looking for suggestions of ways I can teach her something besides 'sit', which we have mastered - yay!! What is a next "logical" thing to teach her? lay down? something else? I really welcome any suggestions! And then, how do I do it? This is my first dog ever and I am such a NOVICE! Last time I came on here and got the greatest instructions on how to teach sit! Thanks guys! Cheryl http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...let1-08004.jpg |
I'm wondering about the best way to teach the 'Lay down' command too..I have just taught Pixie to 'sit' in the last few days..it's so cute! she's 9 months old and is catching on real quick...if a little stubborn at times! I then want to progress to the 'Stay' command...any helpful hints would be much appreciated!:) |

It is easiest to go from a sit to a down than directly from a stand to a down at first. Have her assume the sit position. Then, gradually coax her into down by holding a treat in your hand. Gradually form a "L" from sit to down. If she doesn't follow the treat and go down, gently press her down while saying "down". If you still have trouble, put her up high on something narrow, like an ironing board, then practice at one end. There is something about being up high on a narrow space that makes it easier to coax them into "down". I am going to PM you with a link for training tips. |

PM me too if you can. |
i have always heard that if you are using treats to teach...then you can use them to your advantage. example: if you are teaching to sit, then you hold the treat in between your forefinger and thumb and slowly move the treat behind (but still above) their head so that they are following it and say "sit" over and over again as you do it. most of the time, this will cause them to sit cuz they are watching the treat. then you praise them when their butt hits the ground LOL to teach them to lay down, it's the same kind of thing. when they are sitting, you take the treat and slowly move it between their front legs and this should cause them to lay down. then, you praise the heck out of them for laying down :D it's always worked for me...but every dog is different :) |
yay! my friend came over a few months ago and tried teaching my dog how to lay down. after einstein mastered sit, she would gently pull on his forearms to the floor. it took about 10 minutes until he started doing it himself! now he completely gets it... only if there's a treat that is! |
My Baby got the sit right away at 9 weeks and immediately sits for a treat but the down is hard...when I try to draw the treat forward (while he is in a sit) he slides forward but his butt always pops up in the air :D Any suggestions? (I've tried trying to hold his butt down but I don't want to hurt him..) |
Use something low, maybe even your leg so their lil' butt can't pop up. Just draw the treat under your leg and they'll have to lay down to get it. That's the problem I had with my two. Eventually they got it! |
Kalina was easy to teach. Once you get them to lay down, it's very very easy to teach them to "crawl" by slowly moving the treat forward in front of them (on the floor) and say the word crawl at the same time. That's a cute trick. |
