When is it time Our Yorkie is almost 9mo old. He has been in his xpen when he can not be supervised (which is too much time, if you ask me). He barks when he wants to go out, and his pen has been clean for weeks, if not months. I'm not sure what he would do if he was not supervised. When he is out, we have him in the room with us. He will sit and look at us, but not say anything. I ask the question "do you have to go out", and he stands and looks intently at whoever asked the question. Should he be trusted more? I know he is not a year yet, but I really would love to give him more freedom. Any thoughts? |
I would give him a little more freedom. Maybe for short trips when you go to the store or run an errand. He sounds like he is doing good. |
I think it's time to start trusting him more. One thing though, since he hasn't yet learned how to signal you when he is out of the xpen that he needs to go, except with silent signals (Gus did this for a long time too), there is a good chance he will wait as long as he can...wondering why you aren't picking up the thoughts he has been desperately sending you telepathically :D ...and then he'll just go. You might want to try bell training. It worked for Gus. |
bells I have bells hanging on the door he usually goes out of. The problem is, we are not near them when he is in the living room with us. Should I walk over and ring them before I ask him if he has to go out? I tried to get him to ring them, or touch them, before I open the door, but he is not picking that part up (our cat did though :) ). I'll have to train him to do this too. Thanks again, Liz:animal-pa |
We use a service bell Since yorkies are so small - I opted to use a service bell for potty training. We place it right next to the door. It works great! Hubby thought I was crazy! Once potty trained, we also placed a bell in our upstairs bedroom - but Bailey would ring it when she wanted to play outside. It got annoying - so I removed the bell. Bailey quickly noticed the springy door stop and now paws at it to tell us she needs to go out. Its hilarious!!!!!! The best thing is that she only paws at it when she's serious. :) |

You can also try rewarding him. You put him in front of the bells and if he touches them (even with help) or gets them to ring, give him a treat, say the command and take him out. He"ll catch on. That is funny, your cat is bell trained. They are so smart. :) |
My dogs have always had the run of the house with strict outdoor schedules from day one...I think its time for more freedom but just make sure you realyl watch for signals like searching for a place to go..nose to the ground..big sign!! lol...good luck!! Dawn |
