Potty Training / Poopy Question

I am working with Rudy to go outside ... he is done great on pee outside and we have really got a good a good schedule going with peeing but cant quite get the poopy down.. we take him out about 30 minutes or so after eating and if he doesnt go we then keep taking him out every 20 minutes or so till he goes.. Tonite he ate ate 5 and did not poop till 7 .. all the reading I have done says about an hour.. he is crate trained and does hold poopy for long times so could that be the reason he doesnt go for a couple hrs...??? any help input would be great.. thanks..

housebreaking

Our one year old Yorkie isn't catching on to going outside to poop. She was doing really well until the weather turned cold last winter and that is when the trouble started. She will pee outside but will not poop outside. No matter how long we have her outside, she will wait until she gets back indoors to poop. We don't know if we should try to paper train her and be done with it or what. She likes to go outside to run and play but just doesn't want to poop outside. When she does poop outside we make a BIG deal about it and give her a treat and she is so proud of herself but then she goes right back to pooping in the house. We have bells on the back door for her to ring when she needs out but she has only used them a couple of times. I have never had a problem in housebreaking a dog before....they were always broke within a few months. I had heard that Yorkies are hard to housebreak but I didn't believe it because I have housebroke poodles, shih tzu and our golden retriever without any problems, didn't think a Yorkie would be any different. We love our Gracie but just wish she would catch on to pooping outside...any suggestion???? :aimeeyork

well with my Gracie I know that she RARELY will pee and poop at the same time outside.. I have to take her out to go potty and then she will play play play so then I will take her back inside... and then a few mins. later she is at the door... so I will take her out again... sometimes its instant other times I have to WAIT for EVER... lol good luck I hope your babies will get the hang of it soon... have you tried giving your baby a treat immediately after he/she goes poop?

Yes, we always give her a Hollywood Star treat after she goes poop outside. She is so proud of herself when she goes outside but just can't seem to remember to go to the door every time she needs to go out.

do you have tinkle bells? they helped my little Gracie... and I also would take away all of her toys and put her in "time out" when she would go inside... I would only give her toys back if she went outside... I hope it helps...

We have bells hanging on the back door so she can ring them if she needs out. she has only used them a couple of times.....but we haven't had them that long so I hope she will learn to use them too or if she would bark at us when she needs out, that would be good too. Our golden retriever barks at us when she wants out and I was hoping Gracie might catch on to that too but she hasn't yet.

well with the bells you have to teach them how to use them... EVERY time you take her out you need to let her ring the bells... and then take her out... its a pain at first but... its WELL worth it!

Yes, that's what we have been doing with her but it took her awhile to get use to them.....she was afraid of them at first. She doesn't like noises. She now runs to the door anytime someone goes in or out. She has done better today going potty outside but it is raining again so that messes her up. She doesn't like getting wet. She looks so funny because she runs on three legs when the grass is wet...doesn't like getting her feet wet either.

How old is your Gracie?

Go for a walk. They can't hold it when they walk. I swear Loki is so proud of the fact that he could poop in the yard and 5 minutes later poop down the block. I mean, if you're going to spend 5 minutes in the yard just walk down the block. I promise, they can't hold it. Encourage them to sniff every few yards and they will go!!!

Once they start to get in the habit of going after dinner it will get better. We had this problem with Sammy and we just HAD to get her on a schedule. She still has accidents but very few now and it's usually because we give up after taking her out 10 times after dinner so it's not her fault.

There's nothing wrong with crating him for an hour after dinner and then trying. Just until he gets into a routine. Once he does it like 5 days in a row (and you make a huge deal about it) see if he asks to go out and go from there...

I agree, the walk will do it. But that thing about pooping an hour after eating doesn't seem to work with ours. She is fed in the morning and at night. She will poop in the morning sometime before I go to work (not an hour after eating), and she usually poops when I get home from work (usually an hour or so before dinner). She is pretty regular. You might what to see what the schedule is (feeding time) and when she usually poops, and take her out when she usually goes. I think I am more trained than our baby is, and she is nearly 7 y/o. But she pretty much is on a schedule that she set herself, and I follow.:D

I have Parker on a feeding schedule.....morning and evening. He is doing wonderful with his pad in the x-pen but I am wanting him trained for outside also.
I'm wondering if it will confuse him to crate him and start outside trainning. It doesn't bother him to sleep in his crate or his bed in his x-pen.
He made 5 months today.
Would it confuse him to start him outside now???
