Leash Training Question My lil girl Bindi absolutely hates her leash :( she thinks its a toy or something. she wont walk with it on her harness. she just flips over and tries to chew it off :( any basic help for me to get her to walk on her leash? id love to take her out on her leash in the backyard to get use to it before we go "into the real world." she's 12 weeks now. any advice appreciated!! |
My advice is just be patient. Murfee used to do that too but with persistance it will get easier and easier. Good luck. |
She's still VERY young and like someone else said, be patient! It will work with time!! She is just a baby, and she will get used to it. |
leash training hi. i had a tough time with the leash/harness too. Suki wouldn't walk with me and struggled to free herself from it. She's nine months now and walking her on her leash is no problem anymore. I didn't even 'train' her. One day, I thought 'let's try this again' and she walked along and sniffed around without a problem! Good luck! With time, your little one will enjoy walking outside!! hmm...now what to do about suki's car sickness??? it's always something *sigh* |
Bindi is still just a wee little lass. Time and patience and lots of praise will take care of the problem... What I would suggest is to first get her used to wearing the harness by putting it on her several times a day for short periods of time. Always praising her when she "ignores" the harness. Next attach the leash and let her drag it around the house -- under constant close supervision to avoid an injury. Once she learns the "feel" of the leash attached to the harness, then pick up the end of the leash and hold it. Always give her a quick release and reward so that she will know there is an end. As she gets more accustomed to the harness/leash start holding it longer and even put a bit of pressure and release so that she will get used to that too. I know it sounds very involved, but is is easy as pie. In training, you never ever want to start with the goal. You have to find a place where you are both comfortable to start and then start building in tiny Yorkie steps making sure that Bindi is comfortable with each before you progress to the next. In no time at all she will be walking on the harness/leash like a real pro! |
chattiesmom, excellent advice. Wish I had known about YT when I was trying to figure out answers to all these different issues that affect furbabies. |
I never had any problems getting either of my girls to walk on a leash. I started by getting them used to the harness, then we went to the park with the leash. It took both girls a couple of trips to get the hang, but quickly they associated the fun of the park with walking on the leash. Now pulling with the leash is another issue.:D |

I did what chattiesmom said. i let him walk around with the leash on and after a few days started picking the end up and following him. now when we go outside hes a nut! Pulling me and running to people and other dogs to say hi. paitence is key! good luck tho! |
That is sooo young still. We *tried* to take Lucy and Tucker for their first walk at 4-5 months and it was a joke. It took 20 minutes to go like 50 feet. There was flopping and sniffing and "what the heck?" going on. Frankly, we gave up and didn't walk again until they were about 10 months old. Walk number 2 was much better, but we did some practicing in the house with their harnesses on. Pretty quickly we worked up to 30 minute walks. I think with puppies as young as yours, it's just an age thing. Teresa |

thanks everybody!! |
give it time Einstein hated his leash and harness at first too, until he noticed that it's his freedom to go outside! Now he gets so excited whenever I bring the leash/harness out. I think you just gotta give it time, Einstein's already an year old so just think about how long I had to put up with it too! :) good luck |
