How to keep them off the furniture Hi I am new to yorkietalk and have a problem with both of my yorkies. I have a 3 year year old yorkie and a 11 month old, and I seem to have ignored there bad habit of getting on top of furniture (the couches). Does anyone have any tips on how to train them to not jump onto to furniture? :D I would really love it if they would actually start using there little beds that I bought them instead of the couches. Thanks!:animal-pa |
Maybe try giving the command off everything they jump on the couch and have a coffee can filled with coins nearby. Give that coffee can a shake and it should work. Be consistent and maybe they will find their beds a better place to relax in. Remi is permitted to stay on the hassock only when we are watching TV. I have it covered with nice fleece blankets and he knows that he cannot hop over onto the chair. He is only near the couch when he is on our laps. The coffee can tip works for many unwanted behaviors. Remi hated my swiffer mop and continually attacked it until I used the coffee can several times. Now he ignores it completely and does not bark or attack the mop. Hope this helps! |
I just used "OFF!" and a nudge when they tried to get on the furniture. When I'm not around they occassionaly sneak on the furniture though. |
Thanks for the tips, I am going to start trying that. I guess I just have to be persistent until they figure out what I am trying to tell them. Do either of you know if it takes awhile for them to learn?  |
No help here... let's say they trained me... They go all over the place... I usually throw a sac bed on top of the couch, and it will attract them to it... at least the dirt and the treats end up there... |

Sorry I'm not going to be able to help. I just wanted to add a comment. :D Yorkies love laps. They can't get to laps without getting on the couches. It's a losing battle in my house I'm afraid, but good luck to you. My previous dog (much bigger than a yorkie) was well trained and never got on to the couches. I've given up on the yorkies. When I sit, they are instantly on my lap! Luckily they are small & don't shed. :p Dawn Cody :aimeeyork & Cheyenne :animal36 |
My 2 are not allowed on the couch (unless i am taking pics:D ). I bought 2 children chairs from bed bath an beyond and gave them a treat every time they got into it. Now they love their chairs (without receiving any treats) and I love my sofas:) |

i don't mind it... my baby peanut sleeps on the couch with me, and i don't mind it one bit. the only time i actually mind is when she has muddy or wet feet. otherwise, i love snuggling with her. it is quite annoying though when she jumps up onto guests.... but oh well, it is her house, not theirs! lol. |
I purposely got a rolling computer desk for my computer in our home office. That way I can roll it up to the couch and my 4 furbabies could be on the couch beside me as I'm on YT. I love:2hearts2: them close to me, and if I have to vacuum the couch extra times, so be it.:D They do have a soft blanket to snuggle in, though. Senior girls on one end and the boys on the other. Can't be too close to each other or the seniors may cause a ruckus.:D |
That's one thing that we didn't worry about with a Yorkie. They don't shed;so she can be on everything. She loves to sleep on top of the pillows (bed with shams) and on top of the couch pillows. Our pillows on the bed all have deep dips in them. When I look at the bed, I think that someday I will really miss those big dips!:D |
2 Attachment(s) I just feel back when they jump on the couch when I have people over...especially if they aren't a huge fan of dogs like I am. They have there own blankets, beds, everything that I could think of...and they are right next to me. But they always have to be either in my lap or touching me. I think its sweet, but sometimes I would just like them to use the beds that I bought for them. Its funny they only do it to me, if my husband is on the couch they are usually not up there...they seem to be attached to my hip (following me every where) :D These are my little ones below, Roxy is 11months and Dinky is 2 1/2. Its hard for me to say no to those cute little faces :luvu: Attachment 198713 Attachment 198714 |
They sure are cute :) |
top of the couch I don't mind our dog being on the couch, but he walks along the TOP of the couch. I hate that. I don't know how to stop it. Should I try the can thing? I use that for his barking too. Too much?? |
