Down.. does it work? I have been trying to teach my lil guy for weeks! He has learned everything else since the day we have gotten him without any hesitation at all. he is a little saint! but Down just doesn't work. Any ideas? |
can you manually put him in a down? or make him sit and then put a treat on the ground in front of him and slowly slide it away. this might make him lay down. Or wait for him to do it on his own. when he lays down, say "down" and give him a treat. do this a couple times or until you ask him and he actually does it. he'll associate laying down, with the word down and with a treat. |
I had to wait until Bailey did it on his own and give him a treat. Now he does it all the time when he wants a treat. |
I have never had a problem with my dogs learning Down. It is easier to do a sit then down than to do a direct down right off the bat. Try that. My puppy school teacher suggested putting a little dog up on a small table, bench or counter top and teaching down then. Something about the height and small space entices them to go Down. |
I use a piece of cheese/treat/salmon and show it to my yorkie and then while he is looking/sniffing at it, I put my hands down all the way to the floor and naturally they will follow to get the treat and I will say "Down" as he does it. After a few times, he got it. I have a problem with teaching him "Rollover" though.. |
My husband who trains k-9 police dogs showed me this way, take a treat as the dog is sitting and have it parallel to its face then as your taking the treat down (like on a slide, toward you) you say down. Pup should follow and do better each time. Good luck |
Yes, this works! Your pup will follow the treat! |
