AHHHHHHHHHH Frustrated Ok so I have been working with Rudy to pad train.. He is 5 months old he does great when he is confined to that area.. but when he is out and about that is another story... he just doesnt get where he needs to go to go potty... how can I get him to know where he is supposed to go when he is NOT confined...??? I mean he knows where to go to get water.. and food .. he knows where to go for his toys... why cant he get where to go when he needs to potty..???? I am planning on going back to the beginning and starting over with him.. I just hate to confine him to kitchen when we are home .. and we have a pretty open floor plan so it is hard to gate off ... Any Suggestions?????? |
When they have to much space they do that. Currently runnin the same drill with miss Zoey. She will be anywhere away from the dang pad. I only have them down in case because I am training her for outdoors but with the snow we had she doesn't want to go out and do her business...she is driving me bonkers. Good luck. I suggest limiting the space and keeping that eagle eye on him. |
You have to keep them confined always. if you are gonna play with them then its fine to let them out but if you arent going to be looking at yur kid the whole time then into a playpen or xpen he goes. I know it sucks to confine them all the time but it sucks even more when you come home to a house destroyed with pee and poo everywhere. i just cleaned all the carpet in my two story house and let me tell you its no fun and im not doing it again. hehe soon enough he will be trained and will be able to roam free. |
i say ,, just keep watching,, and if he has a large area to run in,, give him a few potty places,, while he's this small,, they can get to playing and just not make it that far at times i think, here in Texas we are rather confined in our space and we have one potty place here,, but ,,when we go home to Louisiana,, its a different story,, big ole house there at home,, and i keep out 4 puppy pads in different areas of the house, they know where they all are,, and can always get to one or the other ,, even when they have the ZOOMIES running round and round the house!!! i'd say,, give him more convenient places to go while hes small,, he'll learn,, :) |

In order to properly train them you must keep an eye on them at all times when they get to roam free!!! I personally would not let Rudy roam around until you can trust that he will use the pee pad when he has to potty. Good luck!!! |
happy training i heard that they need to be in a small space. i would use a belly band if he's running free in the house. i had a hard time training w/pads...i really believe my york wants to go outside...he only uses the pad in snowy/rainy weather. |
I wouldn't give him free roam until you are 100% sure he is trained. 5 months is still really really young, please be patient and know this can take quite a while for some. Are you taking him to the pad, or just letting him go to the pad on his own> I would take him to the pad every xhours (you probably know his potty time pattern by now) and put him on it and say a key word, I use the word potty, and still re-inforce it every day by praising them when they use the potty box. My two are outdoor trained now too, so they use both methods, but it did NOT happen over night. Patience and praise and reward. Let him know you are happy when he does it right. If you catch him in the act on the pad, praise him |
I have a puppy who's almost 5 months old also. Her momma and my other girl, Foxxy, who's 8 mths old are already trained and won't go in the house or will use the pp pads if they must go in the house(when it's raining snowing, etc.). It does make me feel bad to have her confined when the rest of us are running around so unfortunately, right now my house is pp pad central!! lol. I have a 3 story house and I have 2 pads in the living/family room, 1 in the dining room (same floor as living) 2 pads in the basement and 2 pads upstairs (1 in my room, the other in the hallway. That just about covers all basis. If you don't want to leave her confined while you're home, that may work for you too. I did it for both my older girls..they're trained primarily to go outside but pp pads are for just in case..:) Good Luck |
