Where's your puppy while you're at work Hi everyone, I have a quick question: I keep Duke in a 5feet by 7feet area (with his food/water, pad, bed) of my apartment while i go to work and when I get home I would let him run around the apartment. Recently, he began to jump and found different ways to get out of his area, which concerns me because all his essentials are in his area. I tried and let him have the whole apartment while I'm gone and found that he pooped and peed on my rugs. Any suggestions? |
I would suggest crating him, depending on how many hours a day you are gone. If he jumps over playpens/gates, that may be your only solution. :/ Good luck! |
i keep morgan in a 2x6 foot expen that is three feet high. she's not a jumper or climber so i don't have to worry about that. she has her bed, toys, food, and water in her pen. she holds it 8 hours while i'm at work and get taken out the second someone gets home. |
what about using like two baby gates to gate him in his area... like one on top of another... |
Conner is in a cage which is 25 1/2" wide by 40 1/2" long. He has his bed, food, water and toys. I work part time, so he is not in there long. My sister comes every day to let him out to potty, walk him and play with him. Sometimes her kids come with her. Conner absolutely loves my niece, Ali. He is the only one he hugs besides me. Conner loves his cage. When he sees me get my coat on, he goes in by himself. I think after all the time we play with him, he wants to get some rest. |
My Mariah is 14 wks old and is in an x-pen that my husband built. It is about 2x6 and it is in our master bathroom. We have her food/water, bed and pee-pads in it. This has worked really well for us! |
We keep Sailor and Frankie in their crates during the day...they both prefer being in their crates rather than in XPens while we are gone. They just sleep all day long and are able to hold it until I get home. Magic is left in the living room by herself as she has never taken to being put up in any way, but she is 3 years old and is great able leaving things alone and just curling up all day long. Captain is stays in an XPen during the day with his bed and some water, as he is just younger and likes to be able to walk around a little but is not able to have full freedom due to marking issues. We have all of ours put up in a way that makes them for comfortable for them during the day...each dog prefers something a little different and we have tried to make each happy. I work 8hrs a day, which can seem long, but they have done this all their lives and don't seem to mind it. This setup allows all the dogs to be safe while I am gone!! |
I did two baby gates too My Mozart jumped a gate when he was much younger. I got scared that he would get hurt jumping, so I put one pressure gate on top of another. Soon he forgot he could jump. I went back to just one gate. |
I keep gracie in the kitchen area, with a baby gate blocking it off. She never liked being in a crate, so this has worked out well for me. She has her bed, toys, water, and food. And finally she can hold it all day! Yay, the light went off! :) Today, though, she is at the groomers. I'm having her hair cut short for the first time. |
depends on his age... You're puppy looks young. I think how you keep him while you're at work depends on how old he is and how long you're gone. I would never keep a puppy in a crate for an 8 hr day, as they should relieve themselves more frequently. If you don't have anyone available to let the puppy out while you're at work, the system you have now seems to be best. I would also keep his crate within this area with the door left open and bed inside to keep him used to the crate. If the Yorkie is older, a crate would work fine. |
thank you Thank you everyone for your advice. Duke is 4 1/2 months now. He's been doing better. My friend trained her chi/pom to stay and not follow her when she leaves the house, I might try that. But it sounds like it's better to keep in section off when I'm gone. I come home for lunch everyday so he is alone no more than 5 hours a day. I thought about buying this for him, it would fit his food/water, bed, pad and small space left to play. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index...ductId=2266978 Any comment? :animal-pa |
Charlie was in his xpen until he learned to jump out! Now, he just roams until I can get a top for it. Hes done well with pottying on his pads so I can't complain. |
I don't know if this is an option for you but when Simon learned how to crawl out of his ex-pen space I started leaving them in my bedroom with the door closed during the day. They have stairs up to the bed, food and water, pad, tv is on and some toys to play with. I come home at lunch too so they just sleep when I'm gone :) |
