Housebreaking - average age? Hi all, It seems like my puppy Oscar has turned the corner with respect to housetraining. No accidents for three solid days. My lil guy is 19 weeks old, i got him at 11 weeks. So for the last three days, he has been using the puppy pee pad on a regular basis. Even when he has to go in the middle of the night, he jumps off of my bed, and goes into my bathroom, versus my carpet, like before. Does anyone know the average age a male yorkie gets housebroken? Could he really be housebroken if no accidents for three to four days now? This is so much more enjoyable. I don't have to watch his every move now.... Thank you!! |
The books say they can't be fully trained until 6 mos of age. But my Bailey was fully trained at 5 mos. That said, I limit where she can go in the house. Its been a long & cold winter and I don't want her to wander off and find a warm quiet corner to use - so I gate her in the family/kitchen room with us at all times. Or shut the door in my bedroom in the a.m. They say a dog will not potty in the place they consider their home. So, if you want your pup to consider the entire house as her home - you will have to spend a considerable amount of time in all rooms. Its easier for me to gate off sections when not in use. 3 days without an accident? Sounds like you're headed in the right direction - Congratulations!! I know it is a great relief!!!! At last you can begin to enjoy your furbaby without anxiety. :aimeeyork |
I forgot to mention - my Bailey is a female. Not sure if it matters? I know there has been discussion regarding male/females and potty training. But I think it all depends on the trainer - just my opinion. Thanks! |
Hi, thanks for your message. Oscar is obviously a male dog and has not been neutered as of yet. waiting until i get back from vacation for this... I learned the hard way - that you have to limit access to your living areas. Oscar is allowed in the kitchen and dining room when i am home. i have it gated and another door is shut. what the success has been is that he stops in the middle of playing and will go right to the puppy pad...you are right, now i can RELAX. I was on pins and needles before just hoping he'd do the right thing. I think it also helps that I work and he is crated for 4.5 hours a day. He can hold his bladder up to five hours...but not any more. not five and half or six...so i am excited about the progress. I thought it wasn't going to end!! |
I am having a very hard time training Roxie. She is 21 weeks old and I have had her 3 weeks. I have 2 adult dogs that are trained outside and one that is pad trained and I can't get her to get the idea of pee pads or outside. I really can't figure out how to get her to figure it out. I have never had a dog so stubborn. |
Wow, he is really doing great!! Archie is only 19 weeks old but still has accidents and is limited to out kitchen/breakfast area...for some reason sometimes he pees just outside the pad...but he is doing much better than before...hope to be where you are real soon:) |
