Feeling bad about having to use a harness I feel bad about having to use a harness on Little Man when we take him outside to potty. I feel like if I use a collar it would choke him, so I try not to use his collar. The reason for using the harness or his collar is because he likes to play the "chase me mommy/daddy game outside." It's been to cold to play outside. We are still in the potty training business and he is doing wonderful for an 9 week old puppy, which he turned on Friday. This is what I call wonderful, he don't pee or poop on any of my carpets. If and when he does have accidents or when we aren't home, he will go to the kitchen or the bathroom(if we accidently leave the door open) and does his business. He does have free roam to only 2 rooms at all times and those are the kitchen and the living room. Am I doing the right thing by using the harness to help with his potty training? |
a harness is much better than a collar. Collars can hurt their tracheas. you are not doing anything wrong. |
We used a harness with Crickett when she first came home too because of the same reason. She has since learned when we tell her to come, she runs in the back door. We got so tired of trying to catch her every time we took her outside to potty. She still isn't fully potty trained, but atleast she doesn't make us chase her anymore. Good Luck, eventually yours will catch on too!! |
Thanks. He's getting better about coming to me when I say "inside". He still wants to be chased, its cute the way he goes about it. After he does his business, he will look at me and bark and take off running. When he does this I push the brake on his leash and say,"No!" and "Inside!" and give a little tug on the leash. After I do that, he comes up to me and waits for me to open and go inside the door before he comes inside. I do give him a treat when we get inside while I am taking his harness off. After he is free of his harness he takes off running to hide his treat in daddy's work boots. lol |
Molly has worn a harness all her life. I check it often to make sure it isnt too tight and isn't rubbing on anything. I use it to keep her safe. She's a good dog, and minds me well, but we live near a highway and we have horses. If she got outside on her own it could be aweful. She doesn't ever rub on it or try to get it off or anything. I think it's something she's so used to she doesn't think of it at all. Kathy |
I always use my harness to take Jeter outside, you never know if they are going to be scared of something and bolt. I live across from catholic elementary school, the middle/high school is behind me, A public Junior high is one block over one way and the public library is one block over the other way.It is busy to say the lest so we need to ensure his safety when he is outside. |
Wicket always has his harness on when he is outside for my piece of mind and his safety. we live in the country and have horses and even with the field fencing he can still get through the holes, also we have labs and a jack russell terrier that will take off if they hear anything in the woods or pastures and wicket thinks he is as big and bold as they are and takes off after them, we have hawks larger then wicket. yes I feel bad that he can't run free outside but the risk are far too great and I would never be able to forgive myself if anything happen to him while he was running free. he only wears his harness when he is outside inside he a free yorkie. |
