For those of you that use pee pads... do you never intend for your dog to be trained to go outside or do you just use these while you are away? I used these when our pup first came home and she did use them, but also used everywhere and anywhere else she could find(they are gated in the kitchen when we are gone). If you train your dog with these pads will that confuse them about where they really should go? I dont like the idea of having dog that thinks he can just go inside (like a cat in a litter box...thats just me)...though I dont mind if he uses them while we are away instead of the floor. What do you think...are these helpful or not, and why would a newspaper not do the same thing? Thanks. Laura |
I've found that my pups are the same way. Now, if it was a fresh one, they'd use it until it got used 2-3 times and then forget it. I take mine out about ever 1-2 hours. the pads are for in case they don't make it. I've decided to start crating them at night since I'm tired of picking up poo and mopping pee in the mornings. I also keep mine in the kitchen and they are closed off if we leave and for the night. |
Laura, you will need to choose inside (wee wee pad or newspaper) or outside on the grass. It is almost next to impossible to train them for both locations. Dogs using wee wee pads, seem to have a hard time hitting the little pad with both pee and poo. They wind up getting fairly close, until they just find their own place to poop, (usually behind the furniture). Outside they have grass. Grass doesn't look like carpet, nor smell like carpet. Some people don't have access to grass, so wee wee pads are their only option. The only difference between wee wee pads and newspaper is the cost and the fact that wee wee pads have a plastic no leak film on one side. Both can be chewed up, so the choice is yours. |
Buddy & Jake are trained for outside and also the pads for indoors. They did not do so good on the pads at first, but since they are older (2 & 3 yrs) they perfected it. |
Miko is trained to use the pee pads, but he will also do his business outside. He rarely ever misses the pad. If we're at someone else's house and there are no pads, he will go to the door. |
Jade is trained to go on pads , I never used newspapers. |
Magic is trained to go outside, and only uses the pee pads while we are away...Sailor on the other hand is trained only to pee pads, she rarely goes outside...we let our girls go what works for them, and try to force on them what doesn't work...we have now whiched to reuseable pee pads because they are cheaper in the long run, the girls have switch to them really well!!! |
All my girls are trained to go on the pads and outside . |
I trained Katia on the grass scented pee pads but today was her first day using the litterbox and she passed with flying colors. If you want to try to train them to go outside too I would get the grass scented pee pads. |
TyPerk Did you say your yorkie uses a litter box???? |
Bunny will either go on her pad when we are at home or anywhere when we are outside. Tino will ONLY go on the pads. Even after I take him for a walk, he waits until we get home so he can use his pad! Weirdo! |
I dont know about you but i find the pee pads do confuse my( 2 ) I have all Hardwood floors & have scatter rugs on the floor,i think they get confused with the pee pads & the scatter rugs,so i lifted them up(rugs) & just left the pee pads down, still doesnt work  Minnie is outdoor trained but Scamp is nearly 5 mths old,& i have been working on him a lot,but he doesnt seem to get it... Is it a Male thing??? |

Wee Wee Pads Hi, I have two dogs, one I trained on newspaper 4 years ago. Big mistake. It doesn't absorb. When I brought my Baby Chloe home (yorkie) I trained her with the Wee Wee Pads. I would keep her inside her crate and walk her outside. She did wonderfully. Then I had class a whole week and she got used to using the wee wee pad continually. Afterwards, I started walking her after her meals and she began to poop outside. It was such a joy. To be honest with you , she must of figured out that poop smells stinky inside her crate LOL. Once she waited a whole 6 hours for me to take her outside. She is only 3 months old and 1/2. I had class. I am so thankful she is a good girl. I keep them inside her crate because it gives me a relieve that she doesn't have to wait for me. I would totally do both. What happens when it rains? I don't like to take her outside. My only concern is I feel that she uses the wee wee pad to pee most of the time. I can never tell when she pees outside. She loves to poop on the grass. I hope this helps. :aimeeyork |
