My yorkie snaps and bites me, HELP!!!! My yorkie is about 8 weeks old and for some reason everytime I pick him up he snaps and growls and bites me. When we got him he didn't do this and I don't know if it's because he's a puppy and he's trying to play or if there is something wrong with him. I've tried snapping my fingers and telling him NO, but this doesn't seem to phase him. I don't want to spank my baby, I just don't know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? HELP PLEASE!!! |
he is probably playing... 8 weeks is very young to be taken away so he done'st know what is ok and what is not.. you need to let him know it is not ok.. when he does that.. yelp and ingnore him.. put him down and walk away... |
I'll put him down and then when I go to play with him he does the same thing. He doesn't do this with my husband or even my kids, just me. It's so frustrating. |

Welcome to YT.. Remember he is only 8 weeks old......... He is a Baby. |
It's so nice to be able to have so many different people to talk to about the same thing. I love my fur baby so much and I would hate it if he didn't love me back.:( |

I try to remind myself that he is a baby and that he'll more than likely grow out of it. I just want him to be a sweet boy:) |

My husband and I had the very same problem - our Yorkie did nothing but bite and snap! It was so frustrating that I ended up in tears a few times because I thought we had an uncontollable and unruly dog and that we'd never be able to let people near him - he was THAT BAD. What really ended up calming him down was neutering (4 months old). Until then, what we found most effective was misting with water (not a stream - could injure eyes). The results werent great, but better than anything else we tried. Some of these tactics have worked for others: 1) Roll dog onto back and hold until he relaxes 2) Say ouch very loudly and retreat from play 3) Ignore the dog and refuse to play for a while after a bite 4) Bitter Apple spray can help 5) Some people bite back (SERIOUSLY) - I DO NOT recommend for your and the dogs safety The above tactics did not work for me until our baby was neutered. 3 weeks later I noticed a sharp decrease in the number of times he would bite me. Also, if he did bite and I said "Ouch!" he seemed concerned rather than intrigued. So, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As an FYI - it takes about 3 weeks to a month or so after being neutered for all the testosterone to leave their body, so you may not see him calm down for a few weeks (ours didnt). Take heart - I know that the problem is more frustrating than people realize! :) |
I dont think your puppy knows "Biting" ... Omgosh hes only 8 weeks old, just a baby... Hes just playing:) |
Bark Back I had this problem too. My vet said bark in a high pitch sound back at them... it should startle them....if you do this a couple of times he will stop. Its what dogs in their pack and there mother would do if he was still with them. Try and see if it helps |
The growling back seemed to work with my archie, but I think that it's really just a matter of him growing up a little, give him a few weeks and he will get over this stage. My archie is much better now and if he givesme too much attitude I put him on his back and look at him in the eyes and he understands right away ;) |
Flipping my male Sammy on his back and telling him "NO BITE" very sternly worked for me. Never ever had to do anything else. He learned very quickly that I was the "big dog" and leader of the pack. |
Whoahhhh please make sure he is not injured. Please check him over to see he does not any tender spots. |
I got my dog at 8 weeks - he's now 12 weeks and is STILL snippy and bites whenever you try to pet him. My vet says he has "dominance" issues. I don't know what to do next. I've tried everything in the book. YES I have yelped. YES I've yelled NO. YES I've fawned crying. YES I've tried pennies in a can. YES I've tried scruffing him. YES I've tried closing his mouth/tapping the nose/flicking the nose/wacking the butt. YES I tried positive reinforcement (dog bites, I say no, he stops, gets treat - then bites again! vicious circle), YES I've tried time out's -I am AT A LOSS. His demeanor is sweet - but the biting makes it so I can't pet my own damn dog - the dog I bought for LOVE. :( Great. :thumbdown Now he responds to "NO BITE" but next chance he gets he bites. And now he BARKS too. :( |
Oh heck.. well my "Dustie" now turned 4 months old is still nipping fingers and toes..and he too finds it dfficult to stop when told. I have tried everything mentioned as well...the latest being the squirty bottle... Now he didn't like that but he then won't come to me and sit on my knee... He is so good at others things and is very quick to learn..but he seems to think that my hands and feet are a very good chew...but I keep working on it...He is not going to win... So I guess I am saying that it will take time...and 8 weeks is very young as well... Chrisann. |

For biting: - First make sure it is play biting, not real aggression. If it's real aggression, the puppy is probably in pain. Most likely it is overly rambunctious play. - Make sure the dog has good chew toys and redirect him to those. - I have one more negative reinforcer that hasn't been mentioned - when he bites you, roll his lip over his teeth, so he gets a sense of exactly how sharp his teeth are. The good thing about this is hard bites result in hard (self) corrections, and soft bites are mild. |
work with him Con't to work with him, time out works for me. And lot of toys. And hard bone. In case it's his teeth's. Just make sure no one pets him, like small childrens.:( Next time u go to the Vet let them know and had them check your furbaby , really good in case there is something that hurts. Check his paws, his ears he may have ear mites and that hurt.:( Mine did and I didn't know when I got her:confused:, but she would cry. She had so many, I cry and call the breeder , and he said he would pay the Vet cost. Just don't give up ! and if he bites u, don't play with him for a while. and if he plays with u, and don't bite give him a small treat. It may take a while , but he will learn not to bite, yet it took my daughter as a baby, a 1 yr before she stop bitting LOL ! And I was willing to give her away !!! LOL !! Just kidding !!!!!!:D Bark@ulater ! manina, miley :aimeeyork, max :aimeeyork |
3 yr old yorkie new to home We just bought a female 3 yr old yorkie two days ago.. no others dogs in house but will snip at me when I try to pet her every so often.. don't want to let this get out of hand any help please.. |
He's 6 and still growls and bites Not sure what to do, he's lying next to be and I look for the remote for the tv and he snarls and try's to bite me. I yell at him and tell him to go to his room and he does with back talk. LOL He's now in his room closed door and lights out he knows he's being punished. I have tried not to make a big deal out of this, he might think I'm playing. When I let him out much later, I ask him if he's sorry, he starts to cry and smokes over to cuddle. I know what to do I want to know why he does it. |
