Anyone's puppy stop using the pads?
 

My friend told me that his puppy stopped using the potty pads after a week or two...did any of your Yorkies stop using the pads? I dont' know what I will do if he refuses to use them anymore, and he has missed the pads a lot in the last couple of days.

Young puppies sometimes will cop and squat and ignore the pad. Just correct them and continue to tell them to use the pads and they will.

I use the pads at first and then move them on to the outside. As they get older you can schedule feed them when you want to get rid of the pads indoors.

Lexie was supposedly pee pad trained when we got her, but she wouldn't use them. She just used them as a place to sleep:rolleyes: and would pee on all of our rugs. I started bringing her outside with my other dog to do their thing and she caught on really quick. I wouldn't force him to use the pads if he doesn't feel comfortable unless there is no other option...JMO though.

Thanks, right now I just have the pads in the laundry room where he stays during the day while I'm at work. I usually play with him a little bit and put him back in there for a little and he goes potty in there. I'm going to start taking him outside too, I'm just afraid he would be able to get under the wooden fence in our backyard...

Just a suggestion----You said you are afraid he will get under the fence. Does that mean there are holes or that you are concerned he will dig under the fence? Supervision helps, of course. I always have mine with harnesses and leashes. Too afraid of hawks. There have been posts on other threads that tell how they solved the problem of "leaky" fences. Boards, chicken wire, logs, large rocks. Just suggestions.:)

Oh no I wouldn't let him run around out there by himself. I think the chicken wire is a good idea, the problem is that the fence is made of wood and it's a very high privacy fence...but there are some gaps at the bottom of it. I guess I need to take a trip to Lowe's this weekend!!!
I do have a harness and leash for him but he is too little for the harness just yet, and I got an xtra small! As soon as he fits into it I'm going to start walking him around the neighborhood so he gets used to it.

All 4 of mine are pad trained(of the inside dogs) and the oldest one is almost 10 years now..so, no, mine have never stopped using the pee pad..sometimes, it is very easy for them to go a little off the pad, they will learn..the only one I'm having a hard time with is the one I got at 11 weeks, she's almost 7 mos now, and just will not poop on it..The biewer I got at 5 1/2 mos. but, the lady I got him from had been working with him on pee pads, this little girl of mine though I'm about to give up on..

I am having the same issue right now, my 4 1/2 month puppy has been using the pads for 1 month now and all of a sudden he has started to pee right at the edge of the pad or beside it(he poops on it though). In addition I walk him 4 times a day for 20 minutes each and he does not do anything outside anymore..tonight he came in and peed right by a door...10 inches from the pad! I sure hope it's a phase and I have ordered the purina litter box to see if that will help!

romeo used pads up to 4 yrs old and now he only wants to go outside.

I started using the pads at 9 weeks he is 4 1/2 mos. now and i started taking him out, he was not doing well on the pads, i started crate training him and he is doing better, i think he enjoys going out. I also had the problem with the holes under the fence and i just got the invisible fence and i love it, just another suggestion.:animal36

My shorkie will be one year next month and does great on the potty pads. Now, all of a sudden she's peeing anywhere she pleases. I've always praised and treated her when she does a good potty and KNOWS when she does a bad potty. I'm also hoping its a phase.

I would suggest you start a new post as this one is from 2008. You will get better response if you do that.

Our 21 month old girl uses the pad, and generally never misses. There are those Sometimes still.
We have discovered that if the pad is not clean enough for her liking, she will miss it on purpose. We have watched her cirlce on it and sniff, then adjust herself about a foot off to the side and let it go. Soon as we change it, she hits it like it had a bullseye on it.
Also, if she is ill, say with a UTI, that is one of our first indications that she is getting one. She won't even hit a fresh one if she is ill. She'll miss by 2 or 3 feet then. Wierd, or smart doggy?

Our little tiny 8 month old boy has hit it like a new kitten in a litter box from day one and never misses. The only time he does have an accident, is if his big sister wants to play while he is trying to go. (we have learned that when we let him out of his play yard, we have to hold Bella until he goes on his "other" pad...

So, my theory is that if they use it well, and suddenly stop, (Yorkies are very clever at trying to communicate an issue they are having), he may be trying to tell you something is not right in his little world...

Then again, some Yorkies are just plain stubborn, and need a little reinforcement trainning to get them back on track...
