Pooping advice needed
 

I am training my 11 week old yorkie and she has one particular spot she likes to go to so she can poop inside, well when I catch her, I tell her no very sternly but when I go to her to pick her up and take her outside, she runs away!!! She will run and run, eventually me and my wife have to corner her, if we don't keep her moving she will go in wherever spot she can. We watch for signs she has to go, and as soon as we do we take her out. Any suggestions on why she is running? The only thing I can think of to help is take her out every 30 minutes to an hour whether or not we see the signs are not. What does everyone think?

Sounds like your Yorkie is as stubborn as them all! What worked with me was if you notice that she goes in the morning, or evening, around certain times, try to take her out as often around that time as you can until she goes. For puppies, and even my year and half yr old, they almost always need to go after playing, sleeping or eating. Almost as soon as she's done with any of these, take her outside and use key words to "go." With mine, I say "go potty."

When she goes potty outside, give her a treat right away. If she does not go when you take her outside, when you do come back in, DO NOT let her out of your sight. With my Yorkie, I would crate her when we came back in, would wait about 10 minutes and then take her out again. If she still didn't go when I took her out again, I would crate her again when we came back in. Continue this until she finally goes outside. If you don't crate her, maybe try tying her leash to your belt loop so that she cant go out of your sight.

The point is to force her to go outside and praise her like crazy when she does. I used to really inflect my voice and give her treats and make a really big deal out of it when she went outside. I used this technique, and took my Yorkie out every four hours for a week and she got it. She's been great ever since (minus when she got spayed). And, now, even when we're at the park, she tries to get my attention before going potty so she knows she will get a treat. lol.

I also want to remind you that puppies can usually only hold it about an hour for each month they are old. So, if your pup is only 11 weeks, figure she can hold it for about 3 hours, and not much longer. She is still a little young for TOTAL housetraining, but I think it's never too young to start getting her into the right habits.

It was important to me to teach Bailey not to run from me when I wanted to pick her up. She's never liked being picked up much - she is now 11 mos.

1st - I sometimes bend over to pet and praise - then release quickly (so she knows that I won't always pick her up when I bend over)
2nd - I sometimes pick her up just for a few moments - pet, praise and release quickly.
3rd - For training -I tell her to "stop", pick her up, praise, treat while in my arms - then release.

Only a few times has she ever asked to be picked up - and it was during a thunderstorm (the little chicken!). So far, I have never said "stop" to pick her up and scold - just trying to keep it positive.

Why isnt an 11 week old puppy being confined to a small area, cate, bathroom or washroom? Why is she allowed to roam? Recipe for disaster and bad house training methods if you ask me, but that is just me. Confinement at that age is crucial and mandatory.

I think the OP was decribing when they are home with the puppy, at which time it shouldn't be in a crate. I know this is what I was going through for potty-training as well. I began to think he wouldn't let me catch him because I scolded him before I tried to go get him, instead get her attention by saying her name then asking if she needs to go potty or ask her if she needs to go outside, whatever term your family uses. That may lighten up the mood so she doesnt scurry.

Yes, I would NEVER crate my dogs all day being home with them. My dogs are all well housebroken (who doesnt have an occasional accident? ;) ) I am a stay at home mom, and my dogs run free in the house all day long. They are only crated at bed time. I just make sure to put them outside very frequently as babies, and praising them for going potty out there. If they have an accident, I show it to them, if I didnt catch them while they did it, and give them a very stern "NO" or "Naughty" and put them outside.
The only time they are crated while I am home is if they play out in the snow and get snowballs caked under their hair. Then they sit in their big crate with a towel and dry off.
I cannot imagine keeping my puppy crated all day while I was right there in the house. My sil (who should not own dogs at ALL) kept her Brittany Spaniel on a leash tied to her diningroom table its entire life. She was home all day with her, and it was just torture. Poor dog never got to experience real socialization. Then it would get beat for peeing on the floor, which in turn, they would refuse to give her water after that for a day. :mad: They rehomed the dog last year, finally after many complaints.
She still has a yorkie though, that she is complaining that all of her hair is falling out of her back legs because the cat is scratching her. I dont know, I have seen them lose too many dogs. Her neighbor has called Animal Control a bunch of times on them and they dont do anything about it. :(

NO PERSON who abuses animals should be allowed to keep them not even rodents

Just to clarify, I meant crating them for short periods of time if they do not go potty outside when the human takes them out. I certainly did not mean crating them all day long.
