How big is your xpen? Hello! We have our 12 wk old Mariah confined in our really big bathroom. The pee pad training is just not working...she goes on the pads but she also goes everywhere else. We would like to confine her in a smaller space when we can't be with her but I think she's too young for a crate yet. From everything I've read on here an xpen is such a great idea! I was wondering how big your xpens are (or whatever place they are confined in - when you can't be with them). We were looking at confining her in a space of about 2x6. Is that too small? It is room enough for her crate (which we leave open), her "bed" (which is a little pink couch - sooo cute), food & water and her pee-pads. However there is not a lot of room for her to run around & play in. That is my only concern. I would really appreciate any advice! |
I have Parker's xpen folded into a 3x6 rectangle. I ordered it from Wal-Mart online and it is plastic with six panels. I think the height is 24 inches. I got him at 12 weeks and he is 15 weeks now. I put his wee pads at one end and his bed , toys, and feed, and water bowl at the other end. I use the Simple Solution , Potty Training Spray on his pads. He has used his pads since day one. The only problem we had was with him tearing his pads.......and shredding them. Someone told me about the plastic pad holders at Petsmart.....and I got one and since then he hasn't torn up another. I do allow him in my kitchen area during the day if I can be with him and keep a pad at my kitchen door, and yesterday he used it. I have a friend that has Parker's sister from the same litter......she has the same setup for her as I have for Parker......but she has several accidents. We talked this morning trying to figure out why Parker has none and her setup is the same and hers has accidents. The only thing different , she puts a new pad down as soon as it is used once. I on the other hand, will pick up the poo with a paper towel and leave the pad to use for a few times. She is going to try it and see how it works for her girl.....if not we are stumped...... Hope this helps..... |
Thanks so much for the reply! It really helps! That sounds like a really great set-up! We are going to give that a try! It really sounds like you are on the right track with potty training! |

I do that as well, only picking up the poop and throwing it away. I only change the pad once a day or so, and when I do change it I rub the new one on one of the spots where he peed before so the scent is on the new one as well. If his scent is there he will keep going back to the same spot. I might get some of that spray as well and try it.... |
.... you can make the x-pen as big as you want to....... we put several together when we camp. It makes a nice size area. |

Thanks I appreciate your replies! That is what we decided to do. So far it's working extremely well. Since we limited her space she has consistently gone on her pee-pads. We take her out often and play with her and when we think she has to go potty we put her back in the confined space till she goes (praising her lots). Then we take her out again. So far she has had no accidents at all! We're going to buy her a harness this weekend and start taking her outside too...to get her potty trained to go outside (if the weather cooperates - as we have had some really bad winter weather this yr with -25 temps and lots of snowstorms)! THANKS! |
