Would love advice! We have our Mariah (who will be 13 wks old this Sat) in my master bathroom (it’s big). We are struggling with the pee pad training. She goes on the pads but she also goes other places. I'm thinking about blocking off part of the room so that she doesn't have such a big area. I'm wondering if she only had room for her bed, food and pee pad if she would consistently go on the pee pad. Do you think that this would work or that it's "mean" to contain them in such a small space while they are so young? We crate trained our Bichon which worked very well (she was potty trained to go outside very quickly) but I think Mariah is still too young to be put in a crate for that long yet. We are all gone for several hrs at work/school. The other problem is that we have been having terrible weather so I thought it would be better for her to be pee pad trained till spring. We are thinking about getting an x-pen to put in our kitchen - in the future. I would really love to get her trained! I would love to know what everyone thinks. |

Hi! Yes, we've had her for several weeks now. The big problem is that when we are gone to work/school she is in this big open area and when we get home she has gone on the pads but also in other places. When we "catch" her going on the pads we praise her and I give her a tiny piece of a treat. It just hasn't been enough for her to get the point. Now that's she older/bigger, this week-end we are going to buy a harness for her and start taking her outside regularly as well. THANKS! |
Yes, she needs to be in a smaller space. What you were thinking of in your first post sounds perfect. When she gets that right you can gradually increase the space. |
THANKS! We're going to try that! |
Hi, Keeping her in a small space then gradually letting her have more room should work. That's what I did with my puppy when I got her. She started off in a pen and over the course of a few months she got to roam around more. She's seven months now and has complete freedom at home and work and always uses the pads. Good luck. |
You can buy one of those x-pens. They work wonderfully. You can have 2 pads side by side and still have room for a bed, food and water. |
