sleeping/ potty training with play pen hi everyone! i am a new yorkie owner. his name is sammy and he is 9.5 weeks old. i brought him home a couple of days ago and have since then been using the pet gear home n go pet pen( 36x36x26, basically a play pen) as a training/sleeping/playing area. it has his pee pad in one corner, his food in another, and his bed in another. i also put his toys in there with him. i plan on leaving him in there when i'm at work. i've already started using it for when he sleeps and for nap times, play times, etc.. my question is..... is this a good idea? or should i be training him in a crate? when he's in the crate, he destroys his little cushion area. when he's in the pen, he's as happy as can be and doesnt cry that much at all. just wanted some opinions. thanks |

I think it sounds like a good idea. If you are gone all day and he is in a crate he will not be able to hold it that long. A pen is definitely better. You may want to evenually change to a larger pen, though as he gets bigger. Also be sure he can't climb out of it and hurt himself and don't leave a collar on him, so he doesn't get it caught. Congrats on the new little one! Please post pictures. |
thank you for your advice. i feel better about the pen idea, and he actually loves his area!! |
YES! You are definately off to a good start. The playpen works wonders and had cut down potty training time by like a million percent for my two yorkies. They dont cry, They dont chew everything up, and they pee only when its life or death for them. It works great, i do it and i wish more people would do it as apposed to crate training because it works. Welcome and have a great day |
thank you....yogisdad. i have been using the play pen for his training and he is doing great. sometimes when i let him out to play in the living room,he'll have an accident but i think he is just confused sometimes, anyway, i have high hopes for him. thanks again!! |
We also used the playpen to train all 3 of our little ones. It worked fine for Jack and Gracie but Rosie learned to jump out of it. This was for us the only downfall. Otherwise it was a perfect way to teach them to use the potty pad.:D Good luck with little Sammy!! :teeth: |
