Litter box training? Has anyone ever head of litter box training their puppy? My neighbor mentioned it, but I have no idea what's involved, neither did she. Is it possible? How would one go about training for this? I do not have my puppy yet, but preparing for the big day, which will be around the end of March. :aimeeyork |
Welcome to YT!!! Both my babies are litter box trained, but instead of cat litter I use a puppy pee pad in the box. I have to tape it down becuase they tend to drag them around otherwise. With my male I have to use a higher sided rubbermaid container because he lifts his leg to pee. Molly actually came to us trained to use a litter box with cat litter, but I didn't want to use it and she transitioned over pretty well. There are lots of post on the board about it. There is also a litter product for dogs that is pelleted newspaper, but Tucker would try to eat them. How exciting about your new puppy!!! How can you stand the wait? Do you have a puppy already picked out? Male or female? Again, welcome!! |
Thank you Julie for your reply, it's very helpful. I will be getting a little girl, who is four weeks old right now. I am so lucky as I have my pick among three little girls. She will have silky hair and may be a dark blue. You're right, I am just getting beside myself with the anticipation. I've been reading and reading YT trying to garner as much info as I can to be prepared. I've ordered a few things off the internet...not so sure how I'll dress her: dresses or shirts,ha. I do want to get a purse to carry her in to get her accustomed to it right away. This is just soooo exciting!!:) |
My girls are pad trained as well as going outside and I love this method. The pads are much easier to take along on trips, motel or motor home. With my newest little girl I just put a pad down on the floor of the car and she will go on it if she needs to. I like just tossing the pad rather than buying a pan and litter not to mention I wouldn't want mine eating the litter. Hard to say what's in it. |
My little Teddy Coco is still in the midst of being litter trained. We use Purina's "SecondNature" kit. We originally used the dog litter in the box (it resembles little pellets of rolled up paper) but Teddy thought it was the best chew toy in the world and we we'd find the little pellets all over the house! Now the litter box sits empty and Teddy will still use it. One helpful tip - leave a little bit of the pup's urine in the litter box (just a drop). When we put Teddy in the box and smells the urine he goes instantaneously! Good luck! |
I also use a pee pad inside a litter box and my little boys knows to go to his box to leave his pee and poo behind there. He has a litter box upstairs near the kitchen and one downstairs in the hallway near the bedrooms. A lot of the times if he pee'd in one, he will poo in the other. I use the pee pads from Nature's Miracle which is suppose to have a grass scent so it won't be such a weird transition if I need to him to go outside. I take the pee pads when I take him to visit other's people's houses. |
All of your responses are soooo helpful. Thanks!! |
